Help with ID and General Health of House Plant
Comments (7)Thanks everyone for the feedback! I have taken steps to halt what seems to be a downward spiral, including trimming away the brown and curled foliage, protecting the plant from direct sunlight, and a more aggressive approach to drying out the soil. @terpguy: I inspected the trunk as you instructed, but could not find the symptoms you described. As I'm not ready to sound the death knell yet, I will continue to explore possible rejuvenation. @purpleinopp: The pictures are after the repot. Now that I know the name of the plant, I've been able to do some research, both on these forums and via Google. I've found my choice of pot and soil mixture are not ideal. Another repot will have to be done, as soon as the weather cooperates. The sphagnum layer on top was partly for moisture retention but mostly decorative; I have already removed it since it seemed counter productive to my goal of drying out the soil. Thanks again for helping a newbie! I will post updates....See MoreRequest for ID and General Help :)
Comments (3)Thanks for sharing! Nice "Gollum" cup tips! And welcome, by the way. There's a ton of great information here. Yes, you'll want to change the soil mix. A good fast draining, gritty, mix is what these plants want. Get a bag of cactus and succulent soil (with as little peat as possible), and add 30 - 40 percent Perlite. You could add pumice, fire clay, small gravel, too. Just make sure that water drains well so that the roots don't rot. But you probably know this, since you have such a nice plant. Comments (8)Thanks, Liz and socks! Yes, I repotted the cactus and yesterday was the first time it got some water, so the soil shrunk - I will definitely top up. When I was searching online I came across the Christmas tree cactus, it was a good candidate - now that Liz is mentioning it, I think it might be indeed a Austrocylindropuntia subulata monstrose. I got it from IKEA and I am not ashamed to admit it :) Seems like the plants from there last longer. I don't want to flood the forum, so I will ask the next question here - I bought an E. Perle von Nurnberg and it literally wilted OVERNIGHT. I am not kidding. I bought it, it seemed fine, brought it home, did not water it, the next morning the lower leaves were the wrinkly yellow-ish and limp sign of overwatering. I have discarded the leaves, repotted with a hefty amount of perlite in a slightly larger pot and am thinking about beheading. Never tried it yet though. Right now it is a bit wobbly, because the soil is dry and aerated, and the poor thing is like a danglyhead without its lower leaves. Would it be fine if I behead it now, or should I wait for it to get over the shock of changing homes first?...See MoreAdvice/Plant ID Help!
