kitchen cabinet question - x posted
Comments (14)After looking at dozens, maybe hundreds of pictures of kitchens and reading and considering all of your advice, I think I'm about committed to staggered cabinets that don't go all the way to the ceiling. I just like that look so much better and, since I don't need the additional storage space figure I might as well get the look I really want. I do have to get the electrician to in a plug for me way up there so I can plug in rope lights. That was a great and inexpensive idea that I had not thought about - thank you hostagrams! Worthy, I have to admit I don't always turn on the vent hood when cooking. Truth to tell, I usually ONLY turn it on if I am frying something which, fortunately, I don't do more than a couple of times a year. What can I say? I hate the NOISE my current vent hood makes - maybe the new one will be quieter. But no doubt my cabinet tops are gonna get yucky in the extreme. Will definitely have to line the tops with waxpaper as recommended by meldy and be careful never to mention to friends like Kateskouros how just seldom I climb up there to clean. LOL! Thanks everybody....See Morex post from kitchens, help please!
Comments (7)I would get rid of the columns and make the bottom of the sides of the hood stop level with the bottoms of the cabinets. I would then add trim around the tiled area on the upper part and around the arch above the stove - they both look unfinished compared to the small panels and all the other cabinets. Finally, I would paint the whole thing the color of the island but keep the trim details the same color as the trim in the room. I have to ask, just because I am always the odd thinker about these things - why would one want the range hood to be the focal point in the kitchen, especially when you don't have a one of those monster ranges there, just a cooktop? Seems to me that I would want the island, with the fun chandys, to be the focal point. I say paint it out to match the island and the kitchen trim and let the eye just kind of travel past it. Comments (3)Good question buehl. No specific "decade"... I'm aiming for the overall look of a Victorian farmhouse that was originally built maybe in the late 1800s or early 1900s and then had renovations and additions made over time as the family grew and needs changed. So, I'm not really tied to any one decade. That said, I've never been a fan of "Danish modern" or any of its many derivatives and definitely do not want a kitchen that looks industrial or "professional" in any way. I like raised panels or inset panels on kitchen cabinets, love the way a pretty antique-brass knob looks against stained wood, and drool over cabinet doors with seeded or stained glass inserts. For ease of care, my countertops will be Silgranit - probably the Amarillo Palmira color. Faucets will be ORB in an old-fashioned style with porcelain lever handles and sink will be anthracite silgranit. No stainless steel "professional" appliances for me either. I wanted to get an old Victorian cast-iron wood-burning cook stove that had been converted to gas but DH put his foot down on that one when he found out it cost almost twice as much as a professional grade gas stove. Comments (25)I can't comment on how well this works, if you are 5'4". But yes, there are tons of us here who have raised their countertops. I raised our counters by 2" and extended depth by 6". It's life-changing how much more useful the kitchen got this way. The only potential downside is that our upper cabinets are now harder to reach. In our situation, that's not a big deal. Because of the extra-deep cabinets, our lower cabinets are extremely spacious. And since we installed drawers in all of them, the space is very accessible. So, our upper cabinets aren't used for anything important. And the few things that are in there, are easy to reach since everybody in the family is taller anyway. But if you are on the shorter side, and then you raise your countertops, you should plan on not using your uppers much if at all. Just keep that in mind. Other than that, your plan is awesome and you'll love raising things higher....See Morejaviwa
