Belinda's Dream & Black Spot - In Need of Help
Comments (26)Oh, OK. Just wondering. Aren't these some cold snaps we are having this year across America! I see the forecast for my area is for a high of 40 degrees on Saturday and a low of MINUS 2 on Sunday. Sure hope my roses are up for that--cuz I'm not going out there in that cold and snow to rescue them! About Belinda's Dream, my neighbor spaded hers due to BS problems--or so she thought; leaf problems at any rate. I don't remember if there were certain seasons that were particularly bad, but I know she is angry at roses in general for "lying" to her about the disease-resistance of Belinda's Dream. Then she was "betrayed" by her Knock Out getting RRD. She has since dug up all her roses (about 6 of them) and swears she will never grow another one ever again! I always wonder when gardeners take it so personally about their roses--but accept that other plants will have problems from time to time. Kate...See MoreAloe ID and black spots?
Comments (5)Yeah you guys are right. I thought I had replanted this in more porous soil. After taking it out. I see the original Peat moss based Lowes soil is in there. I did put some LARGE volcanic rocks on 2 inches bottom and the healthier roots went down there and wrapped around the volcanic rocks I guess this is just another example of how bad that peat soil is. My only question is.... WHY did it look so healthy when it was at Lowes being overwatered and getting LESS sun... When I moved it to my house in a sunnier location and added volcanic rocks to the bottom, and only watered once every couple weeks then it started looking UGLY. At Lowes it looked beautiful. I don't get how these peat based soils make such pretty plants in the store then when I bring the same peat based soil home and water less then they look like this???? >_...See MoreBlack spot on roses, need non-toxic help
Comments (13)Buyorsell, that's anthracnose, not blackspot. Hard to find fungicides labeled for anthracnose on roses and it doesn't generally respond to the fungicides people use for blackspot. Neem oil is horrible. I do not recommend it to anyone. Not only is it worthless as a fungicide unless you have very little fungus disease pressure to start with, but it also kills ALL soft bodied insects including many beneficials, such as larval ladybugs, larval lacewings, and minute pirate bugs. I have tried it a few times, different brands, in different gardens. Same results every time - no effect on blackspot, and outbreaks of mites and aphids from the loss of beneficial predators. In our area there's rarely any need for insecticides on roses so no reason to use a combination of fungicide and insecticide anyway, even if it worked on the blackspot. I second the sanitation and early intervention recommended above. Kinda late now, judging from the OP's photo. Strip off the bad leaves, prune off canes with lots of purple spots (that's blackspot too), and start spraying regularly with something, anything, labeled for blackspot that you feel comfortable with. Sulfur and copper are very old remedies for fungal diseases. I use the heavy artillery myself, albeit at the longest spray interval recommended, and my dogs all seem to lead long healthy lives, for what that's worth....See MoreNeed help my Aloe Vera begun forming white spots
Comments (15)The soil felt crumbly, but after i put universal soil together with the soil in which was the aloe planted i've put some warm water ( at the room temperature ) on the plate beneath the vase and on the base of the plant. I am from Europe, in the S-E zone of Roumania and the plant i'll put it in a place of my home where i know it gets plenty of light. But i didn't refer to the color of the suculent that it got whiten out ( the orange circle -and i know that's pretty bad too - ) i meant that all the white spots circled with blue weren't there when i first bought the plant, is there a way i could treat them?...See Morelaticauda
