Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey has died

Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey, who refused to approve the drug thalidomide in the U.S., died today at the age of 101 in London, Ontario, Canada. Because of Dr. Kelsey's refusal to approve the drug, only 17 people were affected by thalidomide in the U.S. and thousands were saved from tragic birth defects. Unfortunately, the drug was approved for use in Canada and other countries where many many people are living with the consequences of this too-hastily approved drug. She also improved pharmaceutical oversight in the U.S. CBC news item about Dr. Kelsey
