I looked at pin oak, and the fall colors of that seem more spectacular than mine. Mine is just brown/alittle yellow when fall comes..

Many pin oaks are like that jalcon. A stately tree if a bit too commonly planted.

I put an angle finder on my phone and with the help of that and a 100 foot tape guestimated how tall my tree was. Was within a few feet of the holding out a stick method.

It's not Black oak, it's either Scarlet Oak, Pin Oak, or Shumard Oak.

My first guess would have been Pin Oak from the leaves. But some Shumard Oaks usually have that branch crown. Scarlet Oak usually has more dark colored and fissured bark, especially on branches and the leaves don't look as close to that IMO. So I think it's likely between Pin Oak and Shumard Oak. More likely Pin Oak because Shumard Oak usually has larger "bulk" at the top center of the leaf. Some Pin Oaks don't have great fall color and others can have great fall color. How big are the acorns? Pin Oaks have small acorns and Shumard Oak has large sized acorns.

Interesting.. The acorns aren't that big..

I'll also note that I'm the spring this tree is messy, dropping thousands of large yellow Calkins.. But I don't mind.

Many Oak are very similar looking until you learn their subtle differences. Black Oak bark is much different from your tree, also Black Oak usually has more leaf lobes than your tree.

It's likely Pin Oak then (Quercus palustris).

Also, is it normal for it to have so much dead wood? I spent a good hour removing dead branches from the tree last fall, and looking at it today, it's.got a ton of dead wood again.. Now.. Most of this dead wood are twigs/branches that are less than 1" diameter.. A few bigger.. What gives? The tree looks healthy other than that and I wouldn't call it bare or anything.. I will however say that it sure does lose alot of leaves just from a windy day. Thoughts?

Pin Oaks are known to have lots of inner dead branches naturally. The reason is the branches are so packed that as the dominate larger outer branches grow longer, they shade out the small inner branches and those die off naturally. Trees can naturally loose some leaves later in the summer, especially during dry periods. The tree looks healthy from the photos, but some times any stress issues can be hidden or not fully known until later. Some common decline to Oaks are from heavy equipment running over the roots, or broadleaf turf herbicides applied around the tree/lawn.

You have a beautiful pin oak. Great tree, even if a bit over planted.

then on the new pic... use it as a scale ... dont need no fancy geometry this way ...

or.. using first pic.. it looks about 2.5 times the height of the house ... go measure house ... this method is easier when its not a split level house ...

The bark is too smooth & light-colored for black oak (maybe also for Shumard). Considering the bark, I'd guess pin, northern pin or scarlet oak. Looks pretty healthy to me & some decent pruning has been done. Fall color, acorns, etc would help ID.
