Oak Tree Identification - Narrowed Down
Comments (12)Thank you so much for your responses. It hasn't produced any acorns yet this year (unless I find an old buried one from the squirrels) but I will post a better picture of the bark and leaves. The lower small branches do die off quick and the live larger ones droop and even though we prune it extends quickly. I will have to try to see the top of the tree and view how the branches are....See MoreWhat happened to my water oak seedling?
Comments (15)DO NOT TRIM, the leaves might be dead but the branches are not, they appear to be fine. The branches, including the leader will send out new leaves. Just plant in ground and watch during spring. If a tree big or small gets too little water or in your case probably overheated (because you watered) it will protect itself and lose its leaves kinda like it's fall. My guess is the soil and pot got too hot, and you might have even scorched it by watering it when it was so hot, instead of allowing the pot to cool down first. Just plant in ground in fall first, then wait till spring to see what branches leaf out, then if you like trim the ones that didn't. If you want, you could mist the branches that have brown leaves on them just to keep them moist till the first frost....See MoreOak Identification
Comments (15)Fascinating, lucky_p! I'm so glad you posted that because at a distance I thought the plaques looked 'shaggy', but it turned out that they were just heavily fissured. Now I can see where it would possibly go in that direction. ken_adrian, don't know exact age of this oak (it's on the property of my new veterinarian's office) but by the trunk size/height/canopy I'm assuming it's in the 50 year range give or take. Probably on the lesser side, but it's a good-size. If I have my directions down and from what's around it I'd also say it gets good strong sunlight for over half the day, but I'm not terribly sure. The Sweetgum next to it is columnar enough not to block too terribly much on that one side and the other side is clear. Ging...See MoreWhat wood is this? White Oak, Red Oak or both? (Pic)
Comments (17)Hickory I believe it is Hickory. Hickory can be similar to oak in color but it does not have the intese grain and layers that Oak has. Variations in the grade of hickory can show different looking floors. So if you do a search for Hickory on the web you might see some far lighter or darker looks. Hickory flooring is somewhat of a mixture of woods. If you notice you will have some light pieces and some dark. That may be because you have different types of hicorky. True hickory and or Pecan hickory, Chinese Hickory, sand Hickory, pignut hickory, shag hickory, .... they can all show different color variation. Hickory is a hard wood. Really! It is hard to sand but it is a good quality wood that will last forever. Hickory used to be used to make baseball bats, canes, tool handles and anything that needed to be bowed. It can be flexible but still really strong. A great floor! Enjoy your hickory floor, it is beautiful. ~boxerpups...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
