HardiePlank Lap Siding with Insulation

Has anyone used the HardiePlank that comes with a built-in foam insulation? I think it's only been available about a year so I haven't been able to find any opinions on the product. It adds an R value of 3 and is attached to each individual plank (like some vinyl siding).

Also, if anyone in the DFW area has had Hardie installed recently, did the siding contractor install the HardieTrim (corners and windows) on top of the lap siding or install the trim first and then butt the siding up to it. Jameshardie.com states to butt the siding to the trim, but 2 large contractors have told me they prefer to install the trim over the siding due to the expansion and contraction of the caulk. They both stated that James Hardie is fine with that approach in spite of the wording on their site.

If that's true the contractor should have no problem producing documents to that effect,otherwise I'd be suspicious.

What is the supposed advantage(s) of insulation adheared to siding? IMO,4x8 sheets,sprayed and batt slows air and water infilteration and has a track record. I'm a fan of new and improved only if added benifit can be demonstrated.

Sorry to report we are experiencing similar problems with peeling and scaling of the pre-finished Khaki Brown hardiplank. We noticed the problem shortly before the one-year anniversary of the installation. To say the company has been unresponsive is quite an understatement. After almost two months and no response to submitting our claim, a telephone call to them revealed they could not find our claim. All information was then emailed. Another follow-up call to them revealed they were not going to do anything and cited "improper installation" which is definitely not the case. They suggested there was not enough tapering for the water runoff. Yet our neighbor just installed the product and the very strip that is sold by hardiplank itself contains no tapering at all. They refused to have their sales consultant located in the area to come by and do a proper assessment. About a week later, my husband received a telephone call from the company indicating they will pay for the affected boards only. The company is supposedly sending us a letter that will outline their reasons for not fully covering their product and a cheque for the dozen or so affected boards. I am anxiously awaiting this letter before I determine what I do next. I think the company is experiencing some complaints and decided to rethink their decision when my husband pointed out discrepancies in their reasoning with their own installation instructions and the building materials they supply. HardiPlank should not be selling their product in northern climates if it can't withstand snow and rain conditions. The sad part of this is that we did not choose Hardiplank without researching and comparing it to other products. It was very much a well-thought out and planned decision. I guess you really find out what 'warranty' means when you have problems.

Ditto Worthy and JDS, Best would be 3/8-3/4" strapping with coravent or crafted insect screen at top and bottom. Any flat non-woven housewrap like 15# felt, standard tyvek or typar would be fine in that application if not using a WRB integrated structural sheathing like Huber Zip. If installers aren't comfortable with a true rainscreen strapping, then homeslicker would be next best followed by drainable housewraps. We've used 3d mesh like homeslicker behind shingles but not lap siding as I've read it can become wavy. Good job researching best siding practices. I don't think any siding should be installed flat against structural sheathing with standard housewraps in any climates except very dry. Non-insulated vinyl being an exception as it creates it's own rainscreen. Check out Matt Risinger's video to see a performance experiment between regular tyvek and stuccowrap. Speaking of which, I hope you are including exterior foam or similar performing wall details.

I would use something fireproof. Either steel or the hardie plank. But probably steel. My ideal house would have steel roof and siding due to the fire resistance, longevity, and it is recyclable. Anyhow, we do need to know if there is any sheathing insulation behind that siding. On older houses they need to add extra insulation (sheathing) to the walls (due to old use of 2x4 on exterior walls instead of new construction use of 2x6).

We might have the most expensive house in our neighborhood, but I don't know for sure and I really don't care. My heirs will be happy with what they can get for it, and I won't know one way or the other. In the meantime I will have enjoyed having exactly the house I want, with beautiful gardens, a fabulous workshop, and construction quality and energy efficiency that doesn't make me cringe. If the next owner gets a slight bargain, so be it. Perhaps there will be karma points.

Per James Hardie site, by filling the voids in back of the lap siding, the insulation:
- Enhances strength and impact resistance
- Helps to reduce appearance of minor
  framing imperfections

I'm not presenting a case against the siding,James Hardie is a top rung product. I find it interesting they give those reasons when their siding is already one of if not the most impact resistant siding on the market. I have used their Stucco Texture soffit as underpinning with less than reccomended framing behind it and been pleased with appearance. If cost is comparable to installing origional product with conventional insulation,I am a fan of JH and would certainly consider using it. If I had to pay a premum I might hesitate if those were the only benifits.

Thanks for the comments, klem1. We had hardieplank on a different house and a carpenter accidentally knocked a chunk out of it. I was hoping this might help prevent that.
