Help! Contractor messed up staining the stairs treads
Comments (8)The labor for staining will probably be less than ordering somewhere between 6 and 14 more of the stair nosings. Right now is actually a great time to go out and find someone to stain them. You might be able to get in on the side-job-because-my-kids-want-bulbous-plastic-yard-toys pricing. A small job like this that can be worked into down days and empty time slots can get you a good price, especially close to Christmas. The problem with using the remaining flooring is the fact that you can't just slap it on top of your current treads. The floor is either 3/8" or 1/2" - so your first tread would be a noticeably bigger step. To be done right you have to lower every riser by 3/8" or 1/2" - you might be able to cheese it and only take a little bit off the bottom 3-6 risers so that it blends in, but it will be expensive to do all that, unless your contractor will do the labor for free....See MoreStair inspiration - How to match a banister?
Comments (4)Sorry for the confusion. Let's see if I can clear it all up. We are planning to replace all of our floors, and also put hardwood on the staircase, and maybe replace the bannister depending on the cost considerations. The modern picture in the post contains the same flooring hardwood color as our new floors. We were also initially planning to match our stairs and the staircase/bannister to the light hardwood flooring. Upon seeing the modern pic above, we are now desperate to achieve the same look of matching the hardwood flooring with the walnut(?) stairs and also add the distinct accented walnut bull nosing. Upon further investigation, we discovered that Tempered Glass railings are prohibitively expensive in our area. So, we were hoping to use the same walnut stain on the stairs as depicted in the modern picture above, and somehow attempt to match wooden bannisters and spindles to those floors. I was hoping you could advise as to what kind of bannister and wooden/metal spindles would work best with the walnut stairs, and light hardwood flooring. I am also entirely terrible with colors. Are the stairs in the picture look walnut color? Worth nothing, we are aiming for a modern, minimalistic/clean, mid-century look throughout the rest of the house. On the staircase you see in the "current house" picture, I was hoping to get rid of the swirl at the end of the railing. Thanks in advance!...See MoreColor match on prefinished wood floor
Comments (6)You don't need a hardwood expert, you need a paint/stain expert. Many Sherwin-Williams stores in my area have designers on staff to help with colors. That may be an option. If you have a local paint store that's been there for decades and has an older, more experienced sales team, they may be able to help. There's a guy at a local paint store in my city who matches stain and paint by eye and gets it right every time. That's the type of person you need. Also, if you don't like white for the stair riser, have you thought about staining the risers a darker color?...See MoreStair treads different color than floor plus trim and banister help!!!
Comments (6)The terra cotta wall helps to make the oak even more yellow/golden than it is. I understand wanting to have an accent color, but another wall may be a better option. I would paint out the whole space a White, possibly SW Alabaster. I would de clutter and minimize the furniture pieces. chose one trim color, to simplify, I would choose the dark of the trim. Risers white, treads dark. railing all dark. including the bandboard. Chose to bring back in only the necessary pieces. find enclosed storage for a sleek look. I see the aqua and terra cota working, just make them the feature, not lost in the other collectibles. Is that a shelving unit along the rail? at the very least, put a backer on it. (the railing area should show clean against a blank wall)...See Moreroadrunnerrita
