Vigor of certain varieties and rootstock

I have been wondering if the vigor of the rootstock can depend on the variety of the rose itself?

A couple of examples for me would be Folklore and Queen Elizabeth. On Dr. Huey both of these roses did great for me, on multiflora, not so much. First year for QE and it's barely grown, one bloom so far. I planted a Folklore on Multiflora last year, a few blooms, not many, didn't survive the winter. Replaced it with another on MF, hasn't even bloomed! I hope I've just had a run of bad luck with these two. They've been a couple of my favorites, mainly because they were such good roses in the past. Other roses I have on multiflora are doing good. Has anyone noticed if it makes a difference with certain varieties?

If you would like both roses on Dr Huey, check out the Edmunds catalog this coming year. They carried both last year and will more then likely carry them this coming year. Now if you want monster bush's, buy two of each and plant them 12' apart from each other, by variety. I like doing this. Makes huge looking bush's. If you're hesitant about this method, just try it with the Queen. I think you might like how they fill in for each other and the amount of flowers you get from a planting like this.

My understanding is that the rootstock needs to be compatible with the soil and climate. Fortuniana, for example, is always recommended for roses in Florida, no matter what the variety.

I have a Folklore on MF that is extremely vigorous--it grew a cane that is well over an inch thick!

I am adding to this old thread that is 15 years old. I have picked up a lot of info from these threads on numerous cultivars that has helped me in my trials of many varieties. I found it interesting that farmerdilla has pale colored Yellow Doll. Different soils and temps can have effects like this obviously. Yellow Doll grown here in Florida is not a pale yellow but takes on a nice bright yellow. I have been growing that early variety here for a very long time. I grow it for it's earliness, for to me, it is the best early variety I have grown. Has anyone grown the variety Royalty? That variety is a 20-22 lb melon which supposedly ripens in 70 days. Noted for being a great pollinator and has an extended flowering period which will help with a seedless variety if you are growing them. I am going to put that one out in South Florida and start it very early so I can have watermelon starting out in early March. I also just noticed this thread started out as most vigorous vines! lol I think Orangeglo is at the top of my list but I have not grown some known for their aggressive nature and am not interested in doing so. I grow strictly for flavor and production. I will sacrifice production to get the quality of flavor I want, but if I can get both, then that is the cats meow. To me, nothing beat Gold Strike! It had it all. I do not see it ever being available again, which saddens me!

Thanks H-Man and Chuck. Your post prompted me to do a little reading on the Spur Arkansas Black apple and the best rootstock. The more I read the more I like the M111 root. Several places indicate that there are mutations of the Arkansas Black that resulted in the spur. Assuming this is correct looks like I will be better off having it on the M111 root. Auburn University has this listing. Although Stark offers a spur this tree was purchased locally. Thanks again for your help. The topic of local adaptation has been discussed here many times in the past. From a genetic point of view it doesn't make much sense to me other than those landraces of Ethiopian Wheat, for instance, that took a couple thousand years to adapt. Tomato seed, both hybrid and OP, is primaily produced these days in the far east and there's no problerm with folks using seed grown in China or any of those other countries. And I can't see seed produced in CA for heirlooms doing any better or worse there than elsewhere. Many of the smaller seed companies that sell heirloom type tomato seed produce most , if not all, of their own seed, so that means seed produced in PA, TN, MO, CA, OR , ME and more is sold and appears to do just fine. I think it's more the local conditions for each grower that appear to make a difference when speaking of a specific variety. Issues such as soil type, how the plants are grown, what amendments are used and when and how much, the degree of various disease(s) present in specific locations, the weather in any one season and on and on. Nicholas, The nursery cummins should be able to help you and this information should help you with the pros and cons of rootztocks www.ctl.cornell.edu/plants/GENEVA-Apple-Rootstocks-Comparison-Chart.pdf Call Cummins with questions but bear in mind its a loaded question your asking because some apples produce faster than others. A standard rootstock is slower than dwarf etc. Here's the website .http://shop.cumminsnursery.com/shop/rootstocks Arkansas black may not produce as fast as yellow delicious for example. I don't think it's an issue with the soil. I have two Liebeszauber bushes on multiflora that are two of my most vigorous bushes and most prolific bloomers, also Rina Hugo and Buxom Beauty are growing good on Multiflora. If QE and Folklore hadn't both done so good for me on Dr. Huey, the issue with certain varieties wouldn't have crossed my mind. Zack, glad your MF Folklore is so vigorous. Are you pleased overall with that rootstock?

MF does very well--I've had it grow very long roots outside the amended area in just one year. Nor have I ever had it sucker.

Multiflora likes certain things, like all plants. If you can provide those things, it does very well. If you can't, it dies. One of the things multiflora likes is acidic soil. So the general rule of thumb is:

pH below 6 0 - seek out multiflora

pH above 6.5 - seek out Dr. Huey

pH between 6.0 and 6.5 - fly, be free, plant what you want or can get.

Now this is totally ignoring any potential virus issue.

However, I do wonder what the pH of the native soil is, and whether something has been done to the other beds that had the effect of dropping the pH. When Queen Elizabeth was a new introduction, almost all commercial propagation was budding onto multiflora selections. If there was something odd about its interactions with multiflora, I'd expect it to have bombed instead of becoming one of the classics of the 20th century.

My roses grafted on multiflora do just fine in our alkaline desert soil. My most problematic roses, as far as chlorosis is concerned, are grafted on Dr Huey. I simply can't tell the difference in my roses' performance when it comes to rootstock. Diane
