Our whole house is a blend of modern and traditional, sometimes executed well, sometimes not. Here is the lowdown on our bathrooms: Our upstairs "family" bathroom floor has honed 4" white marble set in a running bond pattern with a black border (supposedly honed AB) and the same honed white marble with a honed AB greek key border on the shower walls, salvaged black Vermont slate counters on the vanity, white sink and toilet and chrome faucets and lighting. The paint is a C2 color with a spa vibe, I cannot recall the name, the trim is C2 Milk Moustache and so far the vanity is just primed. Someday it will be painted, I'm sure. Our downstairs bathroom has sand colored 5" x 10" tiles (like large subways) on the walls (entire room, it's a wet room), 1" square mixed sand and dirt colored tile on the floors, white toilet and sink, a marble sink top and black iron Kohler sink base and fixtures (they were a display we bought on clearance). There is a 5" wide strip left untiled at about chest height that someday I will fill in a to-be-decided-upon mosiac. Our 3rd, and 90% unfinished bath has a matching Kohler toilet and pedastal sink (some hand painted job that was, again, a display bought on clearance) and a jetted tub. We have white 4" tiles set on the diagonal on the floor and bead board on the tub surround, but that's as far as we've gotten, this bathroom is absolutely the last thing on the sandyponder DIY hit parade. The sink and toilet are painted in blue, pink, green and yellow, I think we'll paint the room a dramatic color as the fixtures have a lot of white, and you can never have too much color IMO. We have no interest in having our bathrooms be cookie cutter, and we don't worry about resale, could not care less and refuse to worry about what some mythical person will or won't like at some possible sale date in the future. I think it's fun to mix stuff up, and having your home look like a high end plumbing shop is not a worry of ours, mostly cuz we're not that together, no one would ever accuse of of looking like *any* sort of showroom. It's been said a lot, but do what will feel good to you, bathrooms are highly personal spaces, you know what your family likes, so go with it. Good luck- sandyponder

I can't answer your question about seperate colors, but I bought a Toto Augusta tub that is 5 ft cast iron. It is similar size and price as the Kohler.

What about putting in a tile sill with tile down to the counter for both windows with wood trim on the other 3 sides? You should be able to use your existing molding, too. Carefully pry it off, trim it and put it back in place with a butt edge against the tile. (We had to remove molding when we needed to fix a pocket door and it worked well. All we needed to do was dab a little white wood putty to cover the nail holes.) Then paint the trim to match your walls or tile. I'd lean towards making the fix as uncomplicated as possible in the hope that downplaying it might be the best way to mask the differences.

I guess I thought that the toilet was to be seen and not heard but it seems like you're making it the centerpiece of your bathroom -- which seems odd to me. Also, I understand that vessel sinks make bathroom cleaning hard as one can't just push countertop crud into the sink. -- amateur
