I am in favor of some differences in the baths, while keeping some finishes consistent. In other words, I think it is interesting if each bath is slightly different, and if you can find a way to make each a little different while also using some of the same materials in each bath. That way, you have your different looks, but it is clear that they are all in the same house.

We used the same tile (subway on walls and penny rounds on floor) in all of our bathrooms, but varied everything else (sink/tub fixtures, faucets, mirrors, etc.) In the master, the tile was used in the shower area only (hardwood elsewhere), in the Jack and Jill it was used throughout, in the basement bath the tile was also mixed with pavers that we used in other parts of the house, and in the guest house the tile was used in the tub/shower only (hardwood elsewhere).

One of the most memorable large homes I've seen had each large bathroom in a completely different style, from radically modern to an antique reproduction with a faux wooden toilet tank mounted high on the wall. The impression was of touring a high-end plumbing showroom. Great! (If you're into making your home feel like a shopping expedition.)

Bathrooms do not have to match. You do not need to use the same cabinets (wood type/color/style) in all the bathrooms, same with tile. They result will be like you gave it some thought.
Most good interior designers do not do what some call "matchy-matchy".

My wife wanted a spa like atmosphere in the master bath, so we did white cabinets with black granite counters, white porcelain vessel sinks, Carrera-marble shower, and a white undermount whirlpool tub with slab granite surround. We did the walls in a relaxing bluish-gray color, and put in chrome faucets. The guest bath was done with a white vanity, black granite counter, white sink, and gray tile shower. The J&J bath upstairs still had white cabinets, slab granite counters (Cold Springs), white sinks, a white cast iron tub with 3x6 white porcelain tile surround. We used the same chrome faucets throughout.

Our bathrooms all have the same faucets and hardware. We used tiles from the same family on the floor. The tiles in the master are a shade lighter than those in the kitchen. We went to a smaller size and even lighter color in the Jack and Jill and powder room.

The wall colors will eventually be different. The vanities are all different colors.

I definitely agree that the bathrooms can be quite different (i.e., master bath very "spa-like", kids/guest baths more playful or utilitarian, powder room, perhaps with really unique details).

But I wouldn't want a house as worthy describes for the very reason he mentioned that it was a good thing. I'd feel like I was in a plumbing showroom and not a home.

For me, a house design -- from the exterior trim to the inside fixtures -- should have a subtle flow, one that doesn't completely jar you as you move from room to room.

Our whole house is a blend of modern and traditional, sometimes executed well, sometimes not. Here is the lowdown on our bathrooms:

Our upstairs "family" bathroom floor has honed 4" white marble set in a running bond pattern with a black border (supposedly honed AB) and the same honed white marble with a honed AB greek key border on the shower walls, salvaged black Vermont slate counters on the vanity, white sink and toilet and chrome faucets and lighting. The paint is a C2 color with a spa vibe, I cannot recall the name, the trim is C2 Milk Moustache and so far the vanity is just primed. Someday it will be painted, I'm sure.

Our downstairs bathroom has sand colored 5" x 10" tiles (like large subways) on the walls (entire room, it's a wet room), 1" square mixed sand and dirt colored tile on the floors, white toilet and sink, a marble sink top and black iron Kohler sink base and fixtures (they were a display we bought on clearance). There is a 5" wide strip left untiled at about chest height that someday I will fill in a to-be-decided-upon mosiac.

Our 3rd, and 90% unfinished bath has a matching Kohler toilet and pedastal sink (some hand painted job that was, again, a display bought on clearance) and a jetted tub. We have white 4" tiles set on the diagonal on the floor and bead board on the tub surround, but that's as far as we've gotten, this bathroom is absolutely the last thing on the sandyponder DIY hit parade. The sink and toilet are painted in blue, pink, green and yellow, I think we'll paint the room a dramatic color as the fixtures have a lot of white, and you can never have too much color IMO.

We have no interest in having our bathrooms be cookie cutter, and we don't worry about resale, could not care less and refuse to worry about what some mythical person will or won't like at some possible sale date in the future. I think it's fun to mix stuff up, and having your home look like a high end plumbing shop is not a worry of ours, mostly cuz we're not that together, no one would ever accuse of of looking like *any* sort of showroom.

It's been said a lot, but do what will feel good to you, bathrooms are highly personal spaces, you know what your family likes, so go with it.

Consistent? Interesting concept... ooo, each one has the same toilet! Does that count? :-) Oh wait, one has a high tank...

We have 5 1/2 baths with three different w.c.s, nine sinks with six different designs and six different tap styles. And the sink and tub taps purposely don't match in three baths. Not as confusing as it sounds!

This is about standard in the homes I build. One exception was a custom where the owners chose the same boring w.c. s and taps in all the baths. This was after they had asked for my "design input". Which I no longer volunteer--unless it's here anonymously where you get what you pay for!

I agree with spacific. Bathroom shouldn't be matchy matchy but there should be some underlying concept that unites them. That being said my bathroom have different toilets, faucets, tile, vanities.

I also think it's better to keep the fixed elements of a bath simple: vanities, tile, counters and add personality with paint color, light fixtures, mirrors, and accessories. Easier to change those.

worthy - just curious ... why did you purposely mismatch the sink and tub taps? Are they the same finish in complementary styles? Sounds interesting.

Mine will all be B&W with a traditional lean. Other than that, they won't match.

I'm not a matchy person, but when it comes to the basic things that make up a bathroom I wanted consistency in our new home. They can be different with accessories and varying cabinet/faucets/hardware. I used Toto Drake toilets, Kohler undermount sinks (easy to clean) and limestone countertops in all the bathrooms. The main level baths have travertine floors and showers. The lower level porcelain travertine. All the bathrooms have Restoration Hardware Bistro faucets, but some are ORB and other are BN. The towel bars/TP holders are either Emtek ORB or another company in BN.

I used 2 or 3 cabinet styles and 2 different finished (one painted, one stained) depending on what room they were with.

I personalize the spaces with vintage mirrors or mirrors I had made at a local framing shop, artwork (etchings, pastel painting) and vintage/antique accessories.

They are enough alike to be similar, but hardly matchy and each has its own personality.

It was accidental at first during construction. But since we were trying to create the idea that this was an old established home, it fit the concept and we didn't change it. Not a single one of the prospects in the 250 or so showings till we sold the home apparently noticed. Just too busy complaining why our house didn't look just like all the rest. (Don't worry. Next time it will!)

Yes, the "mismatches" are in the same finish--bright chrome and antique brass--and are similar at first glance.

While I am a great fan of making each space unique in its own way -- and different from others, I would not make them so different that one is ultramodern and the other is ultra traditional.

That said, I'd love to see different tiles, different styles of fixtures etc in both the bathrooms. To me they do not look mismatchy, but I view them as "individually designed with an eye for detail".

So ultimately purely from resale perspective, some buyers will hate it; but IMO if you match them perfectly, some buyers like me would hate that too!
