Yellow Overload -- In need of low budget help!
Comments (6)My previous house had that same faux finish yellow paint! It did get a bit overwhelming. I think the advice to prime and then see with a fresh eye is good. However, I'm impatient when I just want to get something done already. If you fall into that camp (not that I'm recommending impatience:), perhaps you could start by narrowing down your choices to those you gravitate towards. It looks like you have accents of green and burgundy in your decor, and maybe some green and tan in your granite. Could you start with tans, greens, and other shades that might complement those elements? I'm sure the color experts here will have more specific advice.......See Moreabf (all but flooring) low budget, diy reveal.
Comments (34)That's going to be so easy to use and clean and keep looking good through all the cooking and other projects you and your guys are going to be doing. Really great work; your husband deserves a big round of applause, but it's pretty clear also that you thought things through well before beginning. Hope the flooring goes just as well; it's so great to be able to re-use good wood. My favorite touch is the red bread box, a great echo of your old kitchen and a beautiful complement to the black and white....See MoreCan kitchen lights be reduced? Over Budget!
Comments (11)Breezygirl thanks for sharing your plan and posting pics. I call the nine lights that are to either side of and those centered on the island "island lights" - so I got palimpsest's intent... I could have been clearer on that. I relate to the wait til we can afford it comment too! It's hard to draw the line on what should we do now and what can be left to later. I sometimes feel the pressure of "do it now" or it won't get done. calumin - oh my.. I read, reread, yellow highlighted and reread again multiple times those threads on the lighting forum for weeks.... it was an education process for sure! Like learning a foreign language. I also posted my original plan on the lighting and the kitchen forum and then incorporated those comments into a revised plan. And was most pleased that davidtay looked at it :). Now it seems i am undoing those comments and heading back to closer to where I started :). scrappy 25 - it IS a lot of cans, I agree. The lumen calculation was for twelve cans - and this plan has three more than that! The 4" cans seem to make a lot of difference in the number of cans needed per the lumen calculation. A little mind boggling to me but I tried to follow the expert's recommendations and guidelines on that. Oh I just wish I could KNOW what is best and how it will really look. lauraT88 - I really appreciate your advisement cautioning about eliminating too much. I feel caught between "Is it too much?" or "Will it be to little" if I eliminate some. I definitley do not want pendants or other semi or flush mounted fixtures - other than the dining area chandelier. there is a lot going on visually in the entire space and something else hanging down is distracting and clutter like. I REALLY appreciate the alternatives you suggested too. Dayton designer - thanks for confirmation on the cost - it's overwhelming how much some of these things are. I'm going to take everyone's comments, and any more that come, and see what I can do to regroup on this kitchen plan. I am living with the fear of what if I do and what if i don't - both are feeling a little uncomfortable right now....See MoreTiny Kitchen-Modest Budget: Starting Over
Comments (35)Steph2000 - lol - my house is 1700-1900 sq ft total and that includes 4 beds/2 baths. All the rooms are fairly small. My "formal dining" is about 10x9. FL is, I think, 15x11? That said, please realize that we DO use the FL. Not as much as the den tho cuz that's where the tv and xbox live. The dining room, ok, not used as much. But I love having one! As for the photo, I saw this elsewhere in the forum and really liked it. It is similar to what I am thinking of doing in the bkfst nook. But because the space is shaped differently, I am toying with having the table jutting out from between the cabinets, with bench seating on one wall and moveable chairs on the other. Guess I've been practicing that look in my current space (sans cabinets) and compared to other layouts I tried before it seems to work well. My son and his friends sometimes plop there to talk while I'm in the kitchen (if it's not their turn on the xbox!)I like that the arrangement makes them feel comfortable talking to "just the mom". I feel like you all will perceive me as just closed minded and be annoyed. But I do appreciate your thoughts and the input. Over the years I've considered - moving the family room to the FL space and putting larger dining into the den so that the kitchen/bkfst could be all kitchen. - losing one of the two car spaces in the garage and expand the kitchen out there. - moving the door to the DR over a bit and building a galley kitchen - flipping the bkfst and kitchen spaces -removing the peninsula and using the den as a LARGE family/eating area - removing the peninsula, losing the bkfst area, and put a table where the peninsula used to be and the den furniture besides/in front of it to indicate a separate space. One issue is the cost because a lot of those ideas really need that stupid beam removed to not look stupid. And I simply am not that rich, do not have friends/relatives who are GCs, and am no good at DYI. sigh. Now I'm depressing myself. Maybe I should just sell this house and move....See Moreoasisowner
