UPDATE: Petal Pushers July White Elephant Swap
Comments (150)That's so funny! That time I thought you were just being silly! Good news at the dentist always makes for a better day! Yay! Lisa - I'm so sorry that I've been remiss in taking time to post on the board that I received my prize package from you. I sent you an e-mail when it arrived on Monday. I hope you received it. To everyone else - Lisa sent me the nicest box of prizes from last month's games. For some game when I was the next person to post (it seems like we were waiting for Tracy to materialize but I don't remember why) she sent me some nice gloves and plant markers. For finding that tiny Christmas tree, thereby putting an end to her 'I Spy' game, she sent me a plant off of my want list. She chose to give me Phlox 'Orange Perfection'. I was very excited to get this, as I've never seen it in my area. And, just because she's so sweet, Lisa sent me another start from Larry's iris collection! I'm a lucky girl!...See MoreDo you know anyone who has won a lottery?
Comments (51)Not exactly the lottery, but a nice middle-aged couple from our city won the HGTV Dream Home last year (2015). The local news media did a follow-up story on them and their friends were all very supportive and happy for them. They were able to sell their 70's tri-level and purchase an almost-new one-level ranch in an upscale neighborhood that better suited their lifestyle (grown kids and grandkids). I was one of 10 winners who won a trip for 2 to San Diego in a contest sponsored by Juicy Fruit in 2002 I think it was. The main event was a multi-performer concert headed by Alanis Morisette and included a private concert by her, reception, photos, etc. I took my DD and we had a ball. I don't even know why I entered as I seldom do anything like that. I don't even buy gum very often, but happened to do so and it caught my eye and sounded like fun so I did....See MoreHorror Stories. Comments (139)RE: Novahomesick story about the people & their decorator. I would have to do something to let them know that they weren't as clever as they thought.... I like the idea of billing them for decorating advice - who cares if you don't get any money, just letting them know that you knew what they did ....priceless! You could also see if the decorator was "licensed" in your state & could check into filing a complaint. How about having friends call the decorator (provided she does a free initial consulting) and waste a bit of her time - like they did yours - ending the meeting with " You know, I just saw a house I liked, maybe you could just go there & copy evertyhing......" maybe he/she would get it after about the 3rd time. And you could have a "HaHaHa!" moment of your own at their expense. (I can't take full credit for this plan -- it was hatched while stuck in traffic this morning with my DH who I affectionately call Mr. PA (passive/aggressive). He deals with people like this all the time as an artist I can't tell you how many times he's heard "I can make that myself" or watched people take photos of one-of-a-kind peices with their cell phones. People.)...See MoreTomato canning: How bad is this?
Comments (11)Sorry what I meant to type was tried, not tired. :) As in "have you tried the other methods"? But you answered that question anyway. The lids issue is similar to the old "only use pre-sterilized jars" rule that used to exist. Until they figured out that anything that is processed more than 10 mins. is sterilized in the process. But ideally you do want them clean and lint free and thus the recommendation for the pre-washing. So while one wouldn't intentionally skip that step, if you forget it once in awhile the food is still safe. Processing 1 jar - no you don't have to add other jars but it is recommended just to prevent the one jar from tipping over in there all alone in rapidly boiling water. Depends on what type of a rack you have in the canner. Plus some canners will only hold 4-5 quarts rather than 7 so it is just easier to end up with more than 1 quart left over to process. sherm - what "cookbook" claims that? The most popular method for best quality is the Crushed Tomatoes with no added liquid. And NCHFP claims that pressure canning tomatoes regardless of the method used results in the best quality. But it all depends on how you plan to use them after opening the jars but it is your choice. Since the majority of the time they are used in cooking the uses for wholes and halfs are limited. With that method it can be difficult to get all the air out of the jars, they tend to float more because of all the air left in the fruit, and they often have too much headspace issues after cooling, and the processing time for that method is astronomical. You can lose a lot of water over 85 mins. and often, if the water level isn't monitored carefully and water added as needed, it drops too low during the long processing, lids are exposed, and that results in unsafe foods. So for all those reasons it is the least popular method. My personal preference other than the crushed is the whole or halves canned in tomato juice. Dave...See Morenicole___
