Is it possible to have switch in island for overhead lights?
Comments (5)Since I'm doing all the electrical work in our kitchen remodel I can do as I wish... power daisy-chains via a 14/2 wire (black, white, ground) from the switch that controls the recessed lights and goes down inside an interior wall through the bottom plate into the crawl space... then over and up into the island to a 3-way remote dimmer, then back down, over and up again via a 14/3 line (red, black, white, ground) to a 3-way master dimmer, then finally to the pendants over the island. The lights can be controlled and dimmed at either location. I have the recessed lights wired so they can be controlled and dimmed at 4 different locations. Seems like a lot but we use all of them....See MoreL+Island versus Peninsula - Please Vote
Comments (21)@colorfast - Yep, a happy dilemma - or at least an important one! Upon reflection, it is sort of interesting that once we decided to take down the wall, I had never even once considered my current U layout. Until I happened upon your thread and some others which might have actually been linked from yours. Maybe that was because it seemed so obvious I had to have an island these days? I'm not sure but accomodating 2 decent-sized walkways is about 90" in any kitchen is a lot of my total space. There are only 2 ways to make the island bigger that I can see, though please chime in if I am missing other options: 1 - Eliminate the L and put the stove or sink on the island, which minimizes bare counter space again but would allow me to extend the island to the right about 30 inches 2 - Keep the L but deepen the island so the seating part extends past the beam (my concern with that is that the island extends out of the kitchen in a way that might seem unbalanced?). I have earlier snapshots of both options, for what it is worth. Galley/island kitchen: L with big island: Overhead: It seems to me that Aliris' comment gets to the 'feel' of an island. There's just something freeing about open space. Given my partner's spontaneous comment, perhaps that appeals as much to adults as kids. I can see my cats playing stalking games with the island as well - hopefully not while we are trying to dump pasta water. As I've said, though, I've never lived with an island or open concept so this is all just my imagination and I'm sure my kitchen is going to feel a whole lot more open with the wall down and backsplash window than it does now and I can be happy with that if that's the way I need to go. Palimpsest's comment resonates with me, though, too. I am probably dating myself but I was raised in a world where children were taught manners, that they were not the center of the universe no matter how cute or clever, to not interrupt when adults were talking and were told to go away (outside) and FIND something to do. I think a lot of that was good for kids (and schools, society and adult relationships), especially given the normal/healthy narcissism of childhood thinking patterns. I've been rather flabbergasted to watch my peers parent so differently than how we were raised, though I'm sure there are exceptions. It's a pretty fascinating cultural process to analyze each generation's parenting and what it produces for society, good and bad. That being said, even in the best of situations, mistakes happen and taking safety considerations into kitchen design seems sensible to factor in. OP RULE: Everyone can weigh in on the parenting issue as long as they vote on my dilemma first. lol...See MorePendants above peninsula?
Comments (26)buehl Love your kitchen! I am less concerned with DH sitting there than I am with him standing there helping with prep. But the tv idea still might help with that ;-) benjesbride great idea, I somehow hadn't thought of that. rebeccamomof123 I like what you've done there. Do you have a picture that shows the soffit? For those asking about dimension, it's a small space. The peninsula is 36"w X 70" long with the soffit sticking out 26" and the upper counter depth 12". I was thinking I should hang the light/s centered over the part of the peninsula that sticks out from the upper cabinet (i.e. over the right 70-12=58"). Does that make sense? Thanks for all your suggestions....See MoreLooking for Kitchen Layout Design Suggestions, Peninsula vs Island
Comments (13)mama goose_gw zn6OH Thank you for commenting! Switching the DW to the right of the sink and creating dish storage in the island is a fantastic idea! The placement now IS smack dab in the middle of my cooking zone when I think about it. And the pull out trash bin in it's place makes much more sense. Definitely going to add that to our list of changes! Is there a standard for the depth of the drawers to store the dishes? My husband and I are still undecided about having seating at the island. Since it would be a gathering spot when we entertain, we are worried the walkway may be too narrow for seated guests - guests standing around - and guests trying to walk by. While I love the idea, it is something we are still tossing around. There is currently a storage unit in the school room, on the flip side of the pantry wall. If possible we would rather leave that room as is - since it is technically 'finished'. What are your thoughts about locating the under counter beverage fridge in the dining room built-ins? I appreciate the thoughts on using a counter depth fridge. We currently have a true built-in on our appliance list and the difference in price is definitely worth noting. Thanks again for all of your great suggestions!...See Morewestsider40
