Please, help me save my last lemon meyer. What is the secret?
Comments (19)"Do you loose all your leaves when you let it go semi-dormant?" You must have asked me this same question two times at least already!! I guess you don't believe it. But no, I don't loose ANY leaves in the winter when I grow them under chilly and dry conditions (December until mid-February). I do not keep my limes (Persian or Key limes) in cool conditions (they are much more tropical). Citrus and hot, dry interior conditions just don't go together so I have given up on anything but limes in the house itself. For the rest of the Citrus collection (in the garage), day temps under glass are now in the low to mid 60's even when it's only in the mid 50's outside--that's NOT cold and the air is fairly humid. As I said, my challenge is really just January--the rest of the year is a cake walk. PS. One of the reasons I am anxious to get them out of the garage is that a stronger sun and warmer conditions means that I have to be much more attentive to watering as they dry out much faster now. I wish I could say that I dote over them in the Winter, but I virtually forget about them from about early December until mid-February....See MoreMy first Meyer Lemon tree in the heat of Arizona
Comments (39)Hi, great to see the Meyer is on the way back! I am in NorCal and have had this happen to me (oranges, lemons, and limes) last August (when it hit 102F a few days in a row). I (over)fed them and failed to keep the soil wet. If the Meyer is showing any signs of dehydration even through you are watering / and / or Unless you have definitive proof (soil analysis) of nutrient deficient soil, I'd not add any fertilizer until you get 3-4" of new branch growth. Heavy blooming is a classic stage of recovery from drought and shock. It is much too easy to over-fertilize. A dose of fertilizer raises the salt level of the soil and can quickly dehydrate the plant if you do not keep the ground wet. Just like your lawn, you cannot let it dry out after dosing it with fertilizer. Burned / damaged roots cannot absorb nutrients and by adding more fertilizer you will just more roots. I have a Sanguinelli Orange that looked far worse from two years of steady dosing of organic fertilizer... i stopped the feeding last August, flushed the soil, and transplanted 2 months ago it to fresh soil (without adding anything). Lo and behold it is just starting to push loads of buds. I have a Valencia that suffered through multiple transplants and aggressive feedings. It has about a dozen leaves and is (finally) starting to show nubs of new growth, but looking dehydrated even though its been watered. i think it will pull it and replace the soil this week. Good luck!...See MoreCalling in the Meyer lemon gang of experts for advice on winterizing:)
Comments (39)**Update at the end.** Good evening Mike, thanks for stopping by! I'll have no idea of what the PH of my water supply is. How do I go about finding that out, and in what way does it affect how I care for my trees? I won't fertilize if you think I shouldn't, but ... will it cost me my 5 lemons? I know it's silly, but we've been watching them grow since the beginning of the summer, and I would hate hate HATE for them to drop now. If I don't fertilize, won't my tree get rid of them? Yes, you are remembering correctly, when I repotted my trees they had HUGE root rot damage and there were really not a lot of roots left and almost no capillaries. Now, I know that they grew a big amount of the small ones during the summer, but it's pretty safe to say that these pots aren't full of roots, yet. Do you think it's one of the reasons it took so long to my pots to dry out? Or was it simply because the pots were not above the saucers like they are now? I haven't notices a big difference in my leaves since the watering, but to be honest I've been so busy today that I haven't had much time to watch my trees. I'll take a good look at them tomorrow morning, and I'll tell you if I notice a difference. Thanks for watching that small video! I'm glad you think that they drain well enough for 511 filled pots. It's not complicated to post a video, there is a "video" button right next to the link button when you make a post. The only thing I had to do is upload my video to Youtube first, because it asks you for an html link. Quote: "If I have just the couple of trees that you have, I would water them in the bathtub with the shower head every time they need water. A nice handheld shower head is so awesome for spraying the leaves down every time too..Just constant water on your leaves during the early a.m while watering can keeps mites away for sure.. " Now, Mike, DON'T YOU START! I am NOT carrying these trees up one floor and through my whole house all the way to a bathtub to water them! Absolutely NOT, and I don't care what they whisper in my ear when I'm close to them, LOL! i'll post pictures of the trees tomorrow morning :) Thank you for all your help, Mike, you are always so positive and uplifting, and your posts always make me smile :) . Atheen 10/8/2015 Update: Frankly, I didn't see my trees perk up like they used to when it rained outside. I was expecting a bigger response from that long awaited watering. I still have a few leaves that are slightly curved upwards on the smaller tree. They don't feel as supple as the other flat open leaves. I hope I didn't irrevocably screw up again by waiting to water to long... Fingers crossed that they don't turn yellow or fall down....See MoreWhy are my Meyer Lemon tree's leaves turning yellow?
Comments (7)It has long ago been proven putting rocks in the bottom of a container is a bad idea. Doing so raises the perched water table higher into the container and the tree's root system As to your soil test results, the nitrogen should be high, the phosphorous should test rather low and the potassium should be high. Below I have posted a link showing citrus with a potassium deficiency. https://www.google.com/search?q=potassium+deficiency+citrus&rlz=1C1OKWM_enUS900US900&oq=potassium+deficiency+in+citrus+leaves&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0.27068j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-B AND https://www.yara.us/crop-nutrition/citrus/nutrient-deficiencies/potassium-deficiency-on-mandarin-citrus/...See MoreAtheen - 7a - in Maryland, USA
