Question for Pachypode (off topic)
Comments (7)That stinks but at least you got the first mess out of the way. It's makes the others easier, kind of like the first door ding. I remember I'd just bought a brand new convertible and thought I was so cool (I was 21 or 22). It was a beautiful day so I went to visit a friend to show off my new car. She lived in a basement apartment so I didn't realize that we were having a downpour. Yes, my new car was flooded with a couple inches of water : ( I just got a variegated COT. The foliage is really pretty, lots of color, not just green and white. It's a bit beat up from shipping but I'll take pics when it recovers....See MoreA bit off topic remodel question
Comments (2)In my previous home we took out the door to the basement and removed most of one side wall. We used a railing where the wall had been. So instead of having a open stairway going up, we had one going down. We installed a door at the bottom of the stairs. We had finished off the basement but wanted to be able to close a door to keep the noise level down if the kids and their friends were playing loudly or watching tv down there. We loved how removing the door and wall opened up our space. I will see if I can find a picture and post it later...See MoreOff topic question on bulbs
Comments (3)If you grow enough bulbs in pots you will find out that they situate themselves mostly to the correct water line. I.e. If you grow bulbs in a very well drained mix (like orchid bark and perlite) the bulbs will grow at the bottom of the pot; likewise, a more retentive mix will have them growing at the surface. They don't seem to mind growing longer or shorter foliage to reach the right spot above the soil. The thing that could kill them is if you plant too deep and have too wet conditions, or vice versa. In my experience, anyhow....See MoreWeird off-topic question........long
Comments (9)Actually both the flutter and pendulum are related. Flutter says that if you apply the right flow against something that's capable of movement, and it has some force that opposes that movement, you can in the right conditions get an oscillation (i.e., moving back and forth rather than just deflecting and staying there). The pendulum stuff Stax links explains that if you have a pendulum that you start in motion (and it just requires gravity, not air), that the period (how long takes to swings back and forth) stays constant even when the amount its swing decreases. It also shows that the period is dependent on the length of the cord rather than the weight. So a gust of wing could set it swinging like a pendulum. However, to keep it swinging you need either one of two things, strategically timed gusts (if you have ever seen a pendulum display in a museum, they usually use a timed electromagnet to keep pushing on the pendulum). However, if you have a steady wind, that wouldn't allow the pendulum to swing back except that there may be other forces in play (which would be the definition of flutter). It is correct that it often doesn't take much disruption to stop the feedback loop that causes flutter (although just changing the point of attachment a bit may not be sufficient)....See MoreNicholas C.
