Is soluble gypsum the same as plaster of paris when water is added?

Hi Prairie_north: Definition of plaster of paris: "a white powder, calcium sulfate, that when mixed with water forms a quick-hardening paste. It is used in the arts for sculpting and making casts, and in medicine for molding casts around broken limbs." Plaster of Paris is DIFFERENT from gypsum. Plaster of Paris is made by being heated up, making it into an unstable form ... if you use plaster of paris it will harden your clay further.

If you don't have access to SOLUBLE gypsum ... I would use Garden sulfur (has sulfur plus gypsum) to lower your tap water. Only a small amount (few teaspoon) is enough to lower your tap, to release nutrients in heavy clay. The down-fall of sulfur is it's caustic, best diluted in water, before giving that to plants.

Check your local feed-store, they sell granular gypsum cheap, 25 lbs. bag for $10. Pet store or local feed-store carry cracked corn, plus alfalfa hay & timothy hay. Those break up heavy clay well, so nutrients can be released. I have a wet bed with layers of leaves on top, but underneath is compact & heavy clay. I put lots of gypsum in a hole to plant Duchess de Rohan .. it gave many blooms for spring flush. But the place is too shady, so I moved Duchess away, and planted a summer phlox. That summer phlox is the tallest compared to others, plus darkest-green leaves, plus bigger blooms. Gypsum does both: lowering pH of alkaline tap water, plus supplying calcium. Calcium is very important in growing roses: it's an anti-fungal agent, plus making blooms bigger, plus making stems stronger to support heavy blooms.

The granular gypsum doesn't dissolve well in water, it leaves a sticky & clayish residue .. best used to break-up clay. I prefer SOLUBLE gypsum to use on top since it easily dissolved when watered-in, rather than gunking up.

Thank you straw for the excellent information! My previous neighbor said he used gypsum in his yard, it must have been the granular kind as he said it was to break up the clay. It is good to know the soluble kind can be used for lowering pH and prividing calcium.

Unfortunately the feed store the other day did not have either granular or soluble gypsum, I will keep looking around. I was confused when researching gypsum as some pages said there was some kind of connection to plaster of paris.

Hi Judith: Muriate of Potash is potassium chloride, salt index of 116.2, very high, that's the stuff we use to de-ice in zone 5a winter. I would not use that stuff on any plants. Sulfate of potash has salt index of 43, NPK 0-0-50, plus the sulfate part which makes it more water soluble. The safest potassium with no salt would be chop-up banana peels soaked in water. Banana peels NPK is 0-3-42. MiracleGro Moisture Control potting soil (blue bag) already has slow-released fertilizer for 3-months, no need for additional fertilizer. What it doesn't have is calcium, essential for root-growth. I put granular gypsum bought from Menards on top of my roses ... after 1 month of spring rain, that didn't dissolve. Gypsum is 22% calcium, and 17% sulfur, but it varies with brand .. some brand contains less sulfur, and never get dissolved. The soluble gypsum from Kelp4Less dissolved easily in my tap water, pH 8, so I suspect there's more sulfur % in that one. The instant green-up and deepening of bloom colors most likely is from the sulfur %. I would dissolve the gypsum you bought from the feed store at the rate of 1 tablespoon per gallon, if it doesn't dissolve, then is best used in the ground. Roses Unlimited recommends mixing in 1 cup of gypsum in the planting hole. If the gypsum you bought from the feed store still doesn't dissolve, I would put less than 1 tablespoon of vinegar per gallon ... any more roses will wilt in the heat. Putting vinegar in the heat is risky, less is best. So far 4 studies pointed to calcium and extra potassium as essential in best root-growth: U. of Kentucky with Peters 20-10-20, same with U. of Mass with marigolds. Two additional studies: one with hydroponic lettuce, with the best result Masterblend 20-18-38 with added calcium nitrate and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). This was done hydroponic, no soil, thus the logic for Epsom salt. Another experiment is done by Ohio Link NTD center on New Guinea impatient flowers. Here's the tested ones: Peters-water-soluble 20- 4.4 -16 Daniels-soybean-base 10- 1.8 -2.5 Osmocote 3-month release 15-4-10 5-month slow-release 15-4-10 The best performance is Peters-water-soluble (NPK 20-4.4-16). The worst performance is organic soybean base, too little potassium. Potassium mobility is a 3, somewhat mobile, and gets leached out. Potassium is essential for root growth, that's the only extra fertilizer one needs besides calcium for best root growth. MiracleGro potting soil has plenty of nitrogen, I get a gigantic dark-green Excellenz von Schubert from a band, I had to chop off 2 feet of growth, before planting in ground. The safest bet: chopped up banana peels soak in water for potassium, and gypsum powder at 1 tablespoon per gallon (low salt index of 8). Plus MiracleGro Moisture Control potting soil (blue bag), which already have slow-released fertilizers. Less fertilizer is best for young bands. Hi Diane: My Austins bloom much better this year by withholding nitrogen, and give sulfur to most of them (except for the ones that like it alkaline). Radio Times is a compact short bush ... always blooming. Last year it was a twice bloomer with giant octopus canes. The rose park nearby have Austins grafted on Dr. Huey. There's a big decline over the years, even with perfect soil, plenty of rain and expertise. They bloom less and less progressively. Last year there was only one bloom on Abraham Darby in rainy fall, then I don't see Ab. Darby anymore this year. I kept wondering why my "Bolero" as own-root blooms so much next to 2-trees, now I understand ... after digging up Dr. Huey, Dr. Huey plus own-root, and own-root. Own-roots can spread out, or "sucker" better, an advantage for most efficient-water uptake, water can be gathered from many points. It's easier for water to flow into horizontal spreading roots, rather than go up a vertical stick (Dr. Huey), then fight against gravity to go upward through a constricting bud-union. This bud-union can deteriorate in my -20 below zero winter, or sitting in warehouses drying-out for months.

Hi Lynn: More than a year ago I successfully DOUBLED the vase-life of Radio Times and Mary Magdalene by putting calcium citrate in the vase. Soluble gypsum (calcium sulfate) does the same with extending the blooming both on the bush, and in the vase. Calcium maximizes water-uptake, and firm up plant tissue. Some sites said gypsum is acidic, some sites said it doesn't change pH. So I tested it myself: The dark-green ones that like alkaline soil: Golden Celebration, French Romanticas & Meilland DIDN'T LIKE the excess gypsum: leaves became thinner, and droopy. It's very much like the time I put too much sulfur on Sweet Promise ... leaves wilted in the heat. Roses with musk or multiflora parentage that prefer acidic soil, LIKE gypsum. Excellenz von Schubert, a hybrid musk, does well with added gypsum, so does Annie L. McDowell. Mary Magdalene likes gypsum, its bloom lasts 4 days in the vase, compared to 2 days in the vase from last year. In my pH of 7.7 clay, most Austins bloom better with added acid, except for Golden Celebration, Pat Austin, Evelyn, Wise Portia are healthier in alkaline soil. University of California Extension chart in the below link listed 1 ton of gypsum as equivalent to 5.38 ton of sulfur. It also listed 1.09 ton of Ferric Sulfate as equivalent to 5.85 ton of sulfur. I already tested Ferric Sulfate on my azaleas and rhododendrons in my soil pH of 7.7. It's a DISASTER, leaves get brown burnt from the acid. Both gypsum (calcium sulfate) and potassium (sulfate of potash) best applied AFTER the flush is done, to encourage root growth for the next flush. I applied granular sulfate of potash during blooming, and it browned roses' petals, very ugly. I applied granular gypsum during blooming, and the colors became faded, plus it took away the scent. That's why I prefer soluble gypsum because I can control WHEN I apply for best effects. I also prefer soluble potassium via banana peels and molasses in water. Regardless of what type of soils, calcium is a vital nutrient for plant growth. Even my limestone (calcium carbonate) clay is tested barely adequate in calcium, due to tied-up with phosphorus. Along with potassium, calcium helps with droopy necks. The more petals, and the thicker the petals, like Sonia Rykiel, the more demand for calcium and potassium. The below table of University of CA is also useful if you have acidic soil, it lists what type of liming materials used, and how much to raise to neutral pH. With regard to where to get blood meal? Both bone meal and blood meal here are from pigs, rather than cow (to avoid mad-cow disease). The rosarian Karl Bapst got his blood meal from slaughterhouse. Pigs are not treated with antibiotics as much as chicken or cow, so pig-blood would be best. I grew a 3 feet tall Double-Delight in the pot before by just putting clover plants in the pot, to fix nitrogen. If you have plenty of land, soil from a clover patch is rich in nitrogen, that soil can be used to top roses. Also cracked corn has way more nitrogen than horse manure, except that it's acidic at pH 4. If your horse manure has lime added to deodorize, that would raise the pH to 8 .. and horse manure and cracked corn can be used together to achieve slightly alkaline topping. Pea gravel is a smaller version of river-pebble (has a variety of colors). That's WAY BETTER than lime, since it has a variety of minerals, rather than just calcium alone. Gypsum bleached out Evelyn blooms to almost white. The color of Evelyn achieved by pea-gravel is almost as good as horse manure, but a bit of blue-hue (from aluminum). Horse manure is higher in phosphorus, so I got more pinkish Evelyn. Below are Evelyn blooms, mulched with red-lava-rock and pea-gravel, pic. taken yesterday at 80 degree heat: About your 3 sugar-gums attacked by fungus and scales. Raising soil pH to neutral and applying sulfate of potash will help. Folks throw wood-ash (pH over 11) around rose bush to treat rust (orange-spots-fungus) on leaves. Hi Prairie_north: I post info. on salty manure versus less salt organics (alfalfa hay, cracked corn, red-lava rock, pea pebble) in your other thread (red cabbage juice).

For the planting hole, I get the best result with the no-salt & low-salt stuff: coarse sand, pea pebble at the bottom, cracked corn, alfalfa hay, Rose-Tone or Tomato-Tone, humus & compost. The higher-salt stuff like rotted-manure is best on top. I bought Charlie Compost (organic chicken manure plus corn stalk) on Amazon. That stuff is composted more than 2 years, no smell, yet the result WAS NOT AS GOOD as gypsum, cracked corn, crushed red lava, and Tomato-Tone in the planting hole.

Rotted manure is best on top. Manure has many minerals added to their feed. Chicken has zinc, copper, and boron, antibiotics (bad) added to their feed. Cow has antibiotics, salt and phosphorus added to their feed. Horse has the highest quality diet, less antibiotics, and more alfalfa hay & timothy hay. I tested all 3 types of manure in the planting hole. My conclusion: manure is best on top in the spring.
