should i give up on my wsown salvia?

I had wintersown some new dimension rose salvia that I was really looking forward to. they sprouted way back in late may but have remained VERY tiny(perhaps I removed the tops too early?). I was going to toss them, but they still have some life to them so I didn't have the heart. If I put them in the ground, I'm thinking they're so wimpy they're sure to die. are these just slow growers? i'll try to post a pic so you can see what I mean....

Well, they wouldn't grow as quickly as annual salvia, but from your description and without your picture, yours sound small. I doubt if it had to do with removing the tops, I'd suspect your container or its soil instead. Something inhibiting good root development. Do your containers look as though they have compacted, or are they draining slowly. If they germinated in May, have you fed them with a weak fertilizer solution if still in their pots.

Can you see what the rootball looks like on any of them, that's where I'd suspect the problem is. If planted into loose well worked garden soil, or potted up in larger pots they might take on some growth too.

here's the pic. they're not dead so I'd hate to toss but they are just not growing. I grew Shasta daisy in same cups/soil and they did fine and have been in the ground for weeks now. i did not fertilize any of the other winter sown seedling & they have been doing fine but perhaps these need it. if so i'm assuming i should dilute for seedlings? (sorry-i'm still new at this) I thought they were too tiny to try to plant out but perhaps they'll have a better chance? thanks so much in advance for help!

Hmm I didn't know that about snow. Low is 30 on Saturday so it will be cold but not THAT cold. I was at walmart last night and checked out their plants. Broc and Cauli plants are only 1.69 each so that will be my back up. I guess I will give my own plants a week or so more. My cauli and broc are just so little still and aren't growing much. I guess I could always try again for fall with seeds. My tomatoes are starting to look great. Thicker stems, lots of leaves. They should be good to transplant by first weekend in May or last weekend in April. So that makes me happy. :)

Did you dig down and see if the corn is still there. Seven weeks is way too long. Danger of frost is just one thing to watch for when planting warm weather vegetables. You have to take into consideration the temperature of the soil. If the soil is too cold the seed will just sit there. Get too much rain and it will rot. You can't sow corn too shallowly or the roots won't be deep enough to support the plant. They should be planted 1 1/2 inches deep. The mulch has nothing to do with it. I think you should replant. Look for a variety that is early to mature. Different varieties of corn will mature at different times anywhere from 67 days to 80 days

I kept my small basil plant alive all through last winter in a small pot in the kitchen (eastern sun & artificial), then replanted it outside in the spring. The leaves became thick and tough by about Feb, and the stem was very brown in the spring. Once outdoors, it was slow to get going, but eventually became bushy and productive, and I harvested it a couple more times. It was ok, but not as productive, nor as nice to look at as the newer plants.

Your planting mix looks more coarse than I might have guessed but I still think something isn't right with developing roots, something not making them happy. Do you feel the drainage is OK in those cups, they aren't holding too much water for too long (since salvia likes fast drainage, soils that don't stay continuously moist). Good drainage, lots of sun.

After two months, a little fertilizer wouldn't hurt. If you have a product that dissolves in water, I'd use approx. 1/4 the strength as suggested on the package, or at least diluted by half.

They do look tiny for planting out in August depending on your climate, but something with their present growing conditions isn't working for them.

Thank you. I think I'm going to try to repot in some good potting mix and better containers. we'll see! :)
