I think, I hope, I finally foiled the squirrels...
Comments (4)I have found nothing more effective in foiling squirrels, both the gray and ground (chipmunk) type, than "chicken" wire. I keep a roll on hand at all times, as I have to protect everything I plant, bulbs, perennials, annuals, shrubs and trees, including potted ones. For bulbs, I cover the entire planting area and leave it in place until the soil settles, which is often past the first bloom cycle. Once the soil becomes somewhat compacted, the dumb rodents seem to lose interest. I once tried to eliminate them, by trapping and relocating them to a park several miles away, but after a few years I found that to be a losing effort, as all of the nearby property owners removed most or all of their trees and I have the only designated woodland wildlife sanctuary for miles around. The trees bear many squirrel nests and chipmunk burrows are numerous. Maybe I'm a bit "squirrely" for trying to garden among all of the wildlife? Rb...See MoreTri color cutting rooted - finally
Comments (9)Thank you Crenda. Just as Christopher mentioned, I didn't have luck with many other cuttings or leaves either. I bought good sized plant from local grower for just $5 (I think that was very reasonable); but overall it seems to be more finicky than other jades. It looks like it gets some kind of mold/powdery mildew/fungus or 'whatever' very easily - I have been babying original plant all winter long. The edges of many leaves get brownish/dry looking spots too. So I am pretty happy to have new plant. Actually, I may have 2 more survivors (I don't even know what I have!) - one is looking OK, other one so-so. Here is the photo of original plant. Comments (16)Hi Michelle, no, you are not the only one that has been that frightened or upset. A long time ago I posted on here about my having to kill my first rattlesnake, the beejeezus dance I did before and after and how I didn't think I could go past that spot again. Not a pleasant experience, but it had to be done, and of course by me because no one else was home. Since then I've killed many. I don't enjoy it but it's a necessity when you have pets, kids/grandkids and lots of acreage for the snakes to hide out in. Now just in case you or anyone else thinks that's a drastic measure, I assure you it's not. A friend who raises and keeps snakes for a research company taught me a few things about them and one is that they will often return to the same location if it provides water and shelter. If you're growing more than dirt, you'll have plenty of both. So while a spray from a water hose will often work, it may just be temporary. My advice to you is to always be on the lookout for them and have a very sharp flat head shovel at the ready. And don't be afraid of them, they move very slowly and usually away from you. They really want nothing to do with us humans and will go in the opposite direction if they can. Most people are bitten from startling the snakes or from being idiots and messing with them. I do have cats and they will keep the snakes away to some extent. Mine have warned me that one was near, like the one that got IN MY HOUSE! Ah, you should have seen me getting that guy out and onto the back deck, then the dirt, then making a mad dash to find the shovel, hoping Mr. Snake wouldn't scurry under something before I could behead him! Plus, I had to try and keep all three cats away for fear they would get bit. I did more than the beejeezus dance, I tell ya. ; ) My DH likes to say cussing was invented with the advent of plumbing. I say No, it was when the first cavewoman had to kill a snake! lol! So be brave, my friend, keep an eye on your kids at all times and the other one on the lookout for snakes. And keep that shovel sharpened and ready for a beheading. : ) You can do it! Diana...See MoreFinally tried Persil... (Don't read Larsi!)
Comments (6)LOL andi2928!!! I actually returned my last 2 batches of Persil MegaPerls. They also had, what I found to be a very unpleasant scent & the performance was actually awful. My gym clothes did not smell, nor look fresh & clean and dishtowels still had stains on them. I do not know if Persil has changed formulas....but it is nothing like what I have known, used and loved since the 1980's! Although Tide he Powder "Original Scent" has been ruined by P & G...it still cleaned better than my last 2 boxes of Persil MegaPerls (regular and for colours). Tide Original he liquid performed better too. Although either it is no longer made, or impossible to find....Tide with Bleach he Powder was amazing. I actually, for my whites, buy and use Tide with Bleach powder non-he. Since I have a front loader, that uses a lot less water than a top loader...I just greatly reduce the amount of powder. If using very hot or sanitize...it can produce a little too much suds, but it always rinses away clean from my clothes and machine. Smells clean and fresh too!!...See MoreRedSun (Zone 6, NJ)
