Is this Round up damage on my Jane Magnolia?
Comments (4)Looks like chemical damage. Was there any smell associated with the spray? Asking the farmer might tell you what was sprayed. I rent some ground to a friend, this year it is corn. A common spray they use is 2,4-D (which has a distinctive smell). In consideration of my requests, he doesn't use 2,4-D on the fields around here, because I get the same thing you have to the maples we have planted. I have never seen Round-up damage like your picture shows. Round up is topical and only kills what it lands on, but what it lands on usually dies. Leaf curl is more typical of other sprays....See MoreHelp please - problems with Jane Magnolia
Comments (4)Quite impossible to say what's wrong based just on your description - how big a tree? how large a container? how often do you water? what exactly required the need for spraying? what happened to it over winter? All of these issues could have a bearing on what's going on now, as will photos that accurately depict the current situation. More info needed!! :-))...See MoreMagnolia Jane West of Lubbock?
Comments (2)I have her in Arlington. Right now she is covered in buds and get a couple of hours of west sun. Biggest problems are fungus and drought. I water deeply once a week. Mine has been in ground for 7 years. She does not bloom very well. This year I was going to transplant it. Dumb! The roots were a fabulous web and I am still in awe! I poured well composted cow manure around the roots and resettled them. Then I asked lots of questions from a manager at Calloways. He said it likely needs phosphate. I fertilized with Triple Phosphate and the tree is loaded with little buds. I have lost them in the past to what I believe was fungus or drought. Good luck the flowers are lovely. I went for Jane because I read she blooms a couple of weeks after other saucer magnolias. This is true and that saves her from those ice storms that seem to arrive here after trees are blooming in mid Feb. here....See MoreJane Magnolia advice needed.
Comments (2)the first thing i suggest.. is that you not plant it.. until the proper planting season ... see link ... https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub i dont know what if any impact being in the mountains might have on timing .. or any other variable ... usually .. when you see descriptive.. favoring morning or evening sun ... the point they fail to make.. is get it sun NOT IN THE HEAT OF THE DAY ... this is usually recommended for heavy water use plants .. for example.. hosta love sun ... but they burn if they get too much sun in the heat of the day.. when they cant pump enough water into the plant to offset such ... but then ... they throw in full sun .. whats that all about.. lol ... i would intuit from all this.. that the further south you go .... perhaps ... you need to worry about the variable.. one trick i have for seeing the future is here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=magnolia+x+jane&t=ffcm&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images ken...See Moresequoiadendron_4
