Citrus Greening
Comments (6)I have spent days reading about the studies made in regard to Kaolin Clay. I am in no way an expert, but I can put two and two together. The culprits that the citrus industry has to get rid of is the Asian Citrus Psyllid, also the insects that bite into the citrus leaf is what facilitates the spread of the Canker disease (I'm thinking about the Leafminer especially), and the Sharpshooter that spreads the Pierc's disease. These insects have something in common...they are Anthropods and they use the oviposition to secrete their eggs. When one of these insects lands on the Kaolin Clay and lowers its abdomen to secret eggs, their organ gets clogged up and can't perform it's function. These insects are attracted to the new growth on the citrus. (don't forget aphids) If I had to ration the use of this product, I would at least be very faithful to keep the new growth covered. Now don't anybody say that the claims I'm making aren't established through studies -- You know how it is nowdays, you have to read between the lines because there is so much that can't be said outloud. (and it's only going to get worse) If anyone is interested, there is a company that sells a 25 lb bag for $29.99 of Surround WP. That's the name put on the product of Kaolin Clay. The company is Agricultur Solutions. I searched and read for a couple days about the studies made in regard to Kaolin Clay. Then I searched and searched to find who sells Surround WP, and then comparing prices. I don't know why the company is selling it so cheap. Florida economy? I wonder if Uncle Sam would flip the bill for some of this clay? Think? I can't say what's on my mind or I might disappear. Brass...See MoreAsian Citrus Psyllid, Greening, Huanglongbing
Comments (3)Although the insect took a while to get to the U.S., it was found in Florida in 1998 and by 2000 it had spread to 31 counties in Florida and presently in all counties. The lastest information I have found yet (and it is probably outdated already) the insect is in 31 counties in Texas. California now has a quarantene -- I forget what area since around Labor Day. Louisianna reports in May 2008. There are many articles to read on the subject, but there is so much going on that many of the articles are outdated within months. Comments (5)As I've already told you, I agree with these other people. You do not have hlb. Do you know about tents? If you have a newly infected tree you can build a very basic, and cheap greenhouse like tent around the tree. Heating the tree to 104 to 117 for 48 hours will kill hlb in everything but the roots. *disclaimer- I am not saying it's a cure. So if you get to the tree before the bacteria gets to the roots you can eliminate symptoms for years and possibly forever. That's conditional on you getting to the tree before the roots are infected, and you keeping the tree from getting reinfected. The usda did trials in Florida. It works....See MoreCitrus Greening and Guava
Comments (3)There have been some studies that indicate intercropping of citrus with guava may reduce the numbers of citrus pests; but I don't think anything definitive has come of it. I suspect that the "lack of interest" stems from the fact that it would have little if any commercial use. Some crops and some citrus are avoided by the ACP, just because "they don't like them"; the best citrus example of that is the Makrout (Kaffir) lime. In areas devastated by HLB the Makrout is the only survivor. One of my long range plans is to surround all my Meyer lemon plantings with a row of Makrout trees; because infestation of ACP always comes from the edges....See Moretcgardener Zone 10a SE Florida
