Just this week I potted a Sansevieria in an orchid clay pot. I've never used this kind of pot before so I can't say how it will work out in the long run. It will be interesting to see what comes of your experiment.

I don't use a cache pot, and had a diff goal in mind of obtaining a wild, "ball shape" look, but would recommend for the drying you mention also, even if you don't stick stems through the holes.

Tiffany, your "holy moly" pots are so cool. I wish I had your skill set! I have tools I still can't figure out how to use. [picture cave man looking at drill with confused expression...shrugs shoulders...picks up giant boulder and smashes softball-sized hole into pot]

TYVM, Jentsu! You know how it is, when there's such high tech methods involved as hammering an awl and snipping with pruners, there can be a pretty serious learning curve. The rock is the next level, you sound ready! LOL!

If I use soda bottles or anything really tall I'll poke holes in the side with a push pin.

That's what it looked like when I got it. It was just a mountain of plant with no real roots to speak of and a big hole in the middle of beautiful white plant material going where it needed to go without a speck of dirt on them. I don't know how it lived as long as it did. I wish I'd have been able to keep ore of it together. But I have the big underground tuber connected to the oldest and biggest rosettes so I'm hoping to have a healthier growing specimen, but I have GOT to get them outside in the sun! *and stop babying them in my bedroom/nursery*

I have a rock that has a hole in it...and I put a tiny kalanchoe cutting it it and placed the whole thing in a humidity trap with a little water at the bottom for roots to develop in. I'll get a shot of that eventually. Doesn't look like much right now,but that will change.

I could see drilling a pot til it looked like swiss cheese,then setting it inside another pot with coir stuffed in between them..

Just thoughts concerning airflow and all that. The more air getting to the rootmass,the better.

The coir would get too wet. I use plastic cups and put my 3 and 3.5 inch clay pots in them and trim off the excess top.

Then punch about 1/4inch square hole in each side about halfway up. This protects my surfaces, reduces watering frequency via reducing evaporation but it still gets to "breathe".

Haha, no worries. I saw the response alerts and thought "Dang, that's a lot of people who seem to know about punching holes in pots." Glad you can use this thread to figure things out. I still don't know how to PM people, because I'm a technological luddite, obviously.

I've found that roots seem healthier when they have holes punched in the sides of the pots :) FWIW

I also use these gawdy-awful plastic cups that came with some clearance plants (when they get watered...yeah, it's just a cup of water with a plant in it...you do the math, I'm sure they lose more than they sell but still turn a profit) and punch holes all around with a push pin and put my small Terra cotta pots in them so they can breathe but not as much as being fully exposed to the air.

Sorry for the fuzzy picture, I used zoom and couldn't hold my arms/hands steady. But you get the idea.

Do you get mildew on the sides of the terracotta pot that are inside the cup?

Haven't had them long enough to see if it mildews. I don't use sterile substrate, so hopefully the good stuff will prevent the bad stuff.

They put plastic ones in there, why not clay?

I do actually either vinegar or bleach soak my clay pots. Sometimes both. Sometimes neither and I regret it.

You have the plant right in front of the speakers, LOL! Mine seam to like Nena or Celtic music Gospel Bluegrass too, LOL!

Mine,..at least the ones that are still inside... have been subjected to a fair bit of Devo and Oingo Boingo here lately. lol
