Anyone else watch PBS's The Crimson Field?

I am binge watching it now. It is so good.

He liked to say somewhat poetically that he served on foreign soil and heard a shot fired. That about sums it up. He was in the US Navy and patrolled the Great Lakes. One night, patrolling the Canadian side of the Great Lakes, someone fell asleep on guard duty, dropped his gun, and it fired. He came away from the navy a cribbage player, and the family often gathered around the kitchen table late at night to play the game, which he reminded us was a great pastime in the navy.

The Crimson Field” title refers to the poppies pictured
in the title slide of the show as well as the blood of war. And the
poppies refer to the poem below written during WWI by a Canadian military doctor. I
remember my father reciting this poem at the dinner table from memory
every year when Veteran’s Day arrived and he bought his poppy that year,
which he proudly wore for the rest of the month.

It's on PBS. Episode 6 airs this coming Sunday.

It's the only one I've seen either. I guess the topic of design just grabbed me. I think Dave won the final design challenge hands down but I like Alice as a person much better. Her design just didn't work for me on this project. As the winner must combine both design talent and TV personality, I'd vote for them co-hosting, if that option were offered. They both seem locked into a specific design philosophy, with their projects being quite identifiable. One of the things that has come out of this show for me is asking myself if I have locked myself in a box design-wise, and if so, if that is necessarily a bad thing. Worked for Frederick Law Olmsted....

This version of Poldark was much better than the original one which I watched some years ago - perhaps it's the brooding intensity of Aidan Turner. They are now filming season 2 and the BBC stated that Poldark might be the long running drama they're seeking as a replacement for Downton Abbey. There are 12 novels in Winston Graham's Cornwall series covering the years 1783 to 1820. No air date set yet but they hinted maybe spring 2016. Outlander is also filming and just switched locations. Ron Moore did a Q&A last week and said while he's not in charge of scheduling that we should anticipate late March or April 2016.

A related item i found yesterday: If any of you recognize the name William Safire, you'll remember him as a self-educated expert in the English language, words and word usage. For many years he had a column On Language in the NY Times. One position he held (that I won't necessarily forgive him for) was as a speech writer during the Nixon administration. Among his many accomplishments, he created the memorable phrase "nattering nabobs of negativism" that Agnew used to attack critics. Not an honorable task but a great phrase all the same. Back to the moon, Safire wrote a brief statement for Nixon to read to the press IN THE EVENT he needed to announce that the lunar lander was stranded and unable to return its two astronauts to Earth. Here's an article about it from the Washington Post and a copy of the speech. For me, the first sentence is an unbelievable creation of a genius, simple and very moving. The rest is pretty special too. I hope you like it. Safire's speech for Nixon, just in case needed.

The castigation can end over the wrong word choice. A quick word choice perhaps better replaced with something else. Let's call it an "annoying, unwanted nickname" that for whatever reason is disliked. Your name is Allison, you hate being called Ally, and your siblings do so when they want to annoy you. I think that's what's happened in this thread. I didn't make up the issue, it's there. I pointed out that it was odd for a local to use it. Those making a weak and childish effort to be annoying by insisting on finding multiple instances of use (that everyone knows about) are welcome to do so. It's not particularly clever but the word doesn't bother me. Call me Ally if you want. Like most people around here, I don't use "Frisco". If you want to, go ahead. What is annoying is people making an effort to be annoying.

I'm watching and it's very good. Watched ep. 1 & 2 so far.

DH is a war history buff and he's really into it.

We DVR this, "Poldark", and "Halifax". Yesterday we watched #4 of "Crimson Field". The nurse passed over for Matron reminds me of my late MIL -- a master manipulator. I've lost count of how many actors we've seen in other PBS programs pop up in this one. Good plot, acting, and some gorgeous camera work.

I wonder why I haven't caught that one, Crimson Field! I'll have to check that out. TV seems so bad this summer. I am watching Poldark, though. I noticed Amazon has the books, but TV is enough.

I have been enjoying it. My father was in WWI, and every year on Veterans' Day, he would recite "In Flanders Field" for all of us at the dinner table, usually followed by a chorus of "My Buddy."

sheilajoyce -- Wow, somebody else whose father was in WWI! DH's father was, too. DH is still receiving $1.89/mo. from an insurance policy his father took out then. Beneficiary went from Mother to Wife to Son. Years ago we fought hard to get the policy to pay annually -- best we could do since the government refused to just stop cutting a check. I wonder how many other benefits go out that cost more to process than they are worth.
