Monstera of Split Leaf Philodendron

I got this from craigslist so I'm not sure how old it is, but its quite large and the roots are kind of wound around the top of the planter at the base of the plant. There is a lattice piece on the back but the plant doesn't seem to grown on the lattice at all. We've recently gotten a few new leaves, but the seem to grow and then they get brown spots that eventually take over the leaf and kill it. I water it about once a week and it gets medium light. Any ideas why the new leaves aren't living? The old leaves are maintaining their life.

Having the roots wound around the top of the plant is called girdling. It will kill the plant. You need to knock it out of the pot, unwind the roots and repot it into a larger pot. If you would provide a picture, it would be easier to tell you what kind of plant you have.

If those were nice round yellow spots with a a darker centre it would be easy, but this looks more like a humidity/water and/or Ca problem. If your humidity is too high (unusually high rainfall maybe?) or if leaves remain wet for too long, it may cause such problems which can then be traced to Ca deficiency. However, the best guess is you local State Agriculture Extension Office, since it is very difficult to suggest a cause for your problems from the other side of the globe.

She's a gorgeous Monstera! The holes in the leaves are the clue, Philodendron bipinnatifidum and xanadu don't do that. I can't see them in your pic, but the petioles (leaf stems) should have an observable geniculum (joint.)

I don't have any experience with this plant to help guide you, or a clue why the new leaf looks like that, but plenty of others around here do. Good vibes to your pretty new plant!
