Name That Plant!

The leaf looks oak-like but I doubt it with those berries which I just noticed today. I don't recall seeing it bloom in spring. I walk by it daily. If it did bloom, it didn't catch my eye (or I have a horrible memory!!). It has probably been in the ground about 10 years. Northern Worcester county.

Bumping this up since there were no replies. Since you walk past this tree, is it possible for you to remove a cluster of the fruit? That would be helpful in order to identify this tree.

I think I see ovate leaves among the lobed leaves. Could it be hawthorn? It obviously had lots of flowers in order to produce so many fruit.

My educatd guess would be some species of Sorbus, there are few with this kind f leaves.

or

if there are thorns on the twigs or branches, Crataegus ( which can have similar fruts)

both would flower in creamy white clusters in spring

but that' almost as sure as cristal ball gazing,

some close ups relly could help to solve the puzzle,

With that nice exfoliated trunk, I'll bet that it's a Lagerstroemia x fauriei....one of the L. indica x fauriei hybrids. The family is Lythraceae, if you want to look it up. Didn't it flower for you this summer?

If you haven't made it already I'd buy pit run and plant things enjoying or even demanding excessive drainage, like succulents, manzanitas, eucalypts, maybe an olive tree...Berm of very droughty looking soil adjoining parking area at Jungle Fever Exotics nursery, near Point Defiance Park has some examples of the kind of thing I have in mind. A friend who lives in your vicinity had 88 species of cacti growing in his front yard at one time. GardenWeb contributor I. Barclay has started offering rare plants of harmonious aspect on his Desert Northwest web site; see also his Ian's Plants Pages for photos of dryland/exotic plants here and elsewhere. Perhaps the most gardenesque wild plant sites here in the Puget Lowland are balds, that is bedrock outcroppings where trees are excluded by thin soil. Here one finds sun-loving native bulbs (camas, onions and fritillaries), shrubs (including manzantias) and grasses that cannot survive in the nearby forest. A pit run berm planted with perhaps some of these as well as visually and culturally compatible, sun-loving, drought tolerant plants from other regions would depart from Bark and Junipers but still be quite in character with the region. Thank you everyone! I will take another photo soon when I have the light (I am getting home late tonight, and it will be dark by then -- otherwise I'd post one tonight!). In the future I'll take pictures of the tree/branches too, in addition to the lead. Also, I'll try to position a white board behind the tree to isolate the tree for the photo I do think it is tupelo now that Ken, Dave, and Ed have chimed in. I found this photo online (6th down) http://www.carolinanature.com/trees/nysy.html I didn't know that tupelo grew toothed leaves! Did some more looking into it, and I found a few pictures where toothed leaves appeared at the bottom of trees growing in the shade. I am actually a big fan of tupelo. I found two at Lowe's last year and bought them. Haven't seen any since. I won't try to transplant the little seedlings though because of the taproot.

I will go for a walk and bring back some cuttings. It's dark now. If it's a hawthorne, hope its the thornless kind!!!!

well, I don't know if these closeups will help more. The leaves are alternate. There are ovate as well as lobed, mostly closer to the inner part of the stem. The stem is thornless. It's clean, healthy foliage, both of which do not seem like hawthorn or ash traits. So a very good specimen of whatever it is.

Flipping through Dirr drawings, I would say Hawthorn over Sorbus. None of the Hawthorn leaf shapes he shows are dead on, but close and he does say there tons of Hawthorn species and a lot of variability.

If it is the one-seeded hawthorn, are the berries too immature now to open and look? Are sorbus berries one-seeded also?

It certainly looks like a Malus to me.
