I like the rug but think you need something with gold/tan in it to tie in the sofa. Cute house!

I thought I saw tan in the the lighter parts of the flower pattern. There is another blue color way, but the lighter part of the flower is even less tan more green/white. So I though that I was for sure seeing a tan in the blue/red color way that would tie in with my sofa's color. Here is a close up of the upholstery.

I agree with joanie. Although that rug is really cute, a bit of the gold/tan of the sofa would probably work better. Your house is adorable. I love the kitchen appliances!

I don't think that rug will work as well. Not only are the colors off the styles are as well. IMO the sofa has a more traditional or transitional feel and the rug is shabby chic.

I agree that the rug doesn't go with the rest. It's quite busy and will compete with throw pillows etc.

Where did you find that rug? The colors are wrong for the room I am working on right now but that would be perfect in a different room

I Think the rug would be okay as a temporary fix in the LR and DR abd then move them to bedrooms later. LOVE the rug!!!!!

At 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 could you use two of them? Or perhaps do a google search with the picture?

Don't forget eBay. I bought a rug there last year and I'm very satisfied with it. Less than $200 and I think it was 8x10. Too lazy to go upstairs and measure it.

So I found this at Home Depot and it will match, but it is kind of blah.

I really like that multicolor patchwork rug from home decorators, I just wish it hadn't been discontinued. The colors are perfect and I like that it is whimsical.

There's also this from pier one, but it would be too much to have the same rug in the living and dining room plus it is more than the other rugs I've been looking at.

And I should clarify my budget, $1,000 for both rugs and preferably less. The original floral rug in my post would be $500 or so plus tax for both the 5x7 and 8x10.

You might see if you can find something on your local Craigslist. I bought two used Pottery Barn rugs that were like new for about 1/4 the price they sold for new. That way you don't spend a lot of money on something you may replace later. Have them cleaned, then put them in your very cute new house.

Definitely look at overstock, and put check off colors you would like, as well as sizes. There are a ton ----- and just for example, what do you think of this? Wilson blue on overstock.?just an example.

I love red roses on light blue, and in fact was looking to do that scheme for a beachhouse bath but I ended up doing light green and roses.

However, I don't think the rugs work with the sofa, i think they are crying out for a white duck sofa.

As far as patchwork, i rather like this one from Dash and Albert, but it is above your budget in the size you want ...

Here is a suggestion, though. I am not sure I would put a rug under a DR table, esp/ if it is not a formal DR but (if I am looking at your layout correctly), also the everyday kitchen table too? I would hesitate to put a rug under a table used daily with children for multiple meals. If you really felt you needed to for noise reduction, I would get a really cheap sisal look rug or even indoor outdoor, but I first would try to do without.

Another angle, are you sure you need an 8x10? Have you done a floor plan? You can have a rug that is "all off" (furniture legs) instead of "all on"; could you get away with a smaller rug then? Or even buy, again, a really cheap sisal look and put another rug over it or buy an expensive rug just as a runner.I think of the patterned rugs as almost like a painting and if you can get the look in a smaller size, that might work and still preserve your budget?

I think your sofa is charming. I see the vintage English appearance in it...............but that with the peony rug.....nope. Don't like it together.

Here's one from Pottery Barn that I have seen in person. The color is more grey-blue than it looks on my monitor, but it is very nice. If you went with an 8x10 and a 5x8 at the current sale prices, it would be right at $1000 for both. I have also been told that they sometimes mark down rugs in the stores differently than on the website, so it might be worth taking a look or calling and asking what they have in your sizes and colors.

This one is a more contemporary take on a floral. I haven't seen it in poerson so I'm not sure if it would work with the gold in your sofa. One advantage to this one is that you might do two 5x8 rugs since the all-off would mean you'd see more of the pattern. Seems like it would be a waste to cover up a lot of that one.

I love the idea of a white/ivory slipcovered, cotton duck sofa but that will never work in my house. I need a darker, textured upholstery for my rough and tumble kids + labradoodle.

I plan to have a few of my grandmother's blue plates up, I'm not sure what they are called. They are Dutch I think and a cobalt sort of blue. Like this

So I need the rug to work with that shade of blue and the rug needs to lend itself to a cottage sort of feel. Here are some new contenders

Above, of Beverley's choices, I like the second down in the right column.i don't like any the Op has posted except The washed blue one, and it is blue and taupe and the gold sofa would not favor it.

None of them have the vibe the poster was looking for, but all of them work very well with the sofa. (BTW, are you sure you want the sofa? Is that a done deal?) I agree w KSWL the second row, right hand column has the airiest feel and to me comes closest to cottage.

Those newly added blue plates really threw a wrench into the selection. I think these rugs keep the English Cottage style and coordinate with the retro style sofa that the OP originally noted as important to her.

I like this one best, but there may be too much white background for the OP. Martha Stewart Rug.

Reese, I like the soft, faded tones of the persian you posted most recently at the top. Its nor trendy at all, but it is not cottagey either. OTOH persians are chameleon like and you can still skew cottagey with other items.

Beverly, didnt you originally have 2 columns of three above? AM I losing it?

I absolutely LOVE your house and the direction you're going with your décor! I went from wanting my house to look like a little Mexican hacienda to wanting it to remind me of my holidays in England, and I've dealt with the rug issue myself. While tempting to select something very floral (or even kitsch), I would caution you to keep in mind that true English cottage style is more of a collected abundance of everyday items -- even if it's pared down. In other words, the individual elements shouldn't scream "Look at me! I'm English Country!" Think along the lines of a slightly faded Persian rug that looks like it must have been in the family for years. Too, I've seen sisal and other plain/natural rugs used in English cottages and that's a great look, especially when you desire an open airiness. Think timeworn pattern-upon-pattern, bring in a collection of throw pillows (there are some wonderful Union Jack pillows on Etsy), favorite framed prints on the wall - you know the look, I'm sure!

I would favor one of the darker patterned rugs if you have young kids and labradoodles!! I have spent too much of my life trying to remove dirt/stains from too light rugs!!

I have found polypropylene rugs very easy to keep clean-- they don't absorb stains like wool can...
