Snap in grilles or permanent?
Comments (3)The grids inside the glass look fine in most cases. If you have the True Divided Lights (TDL), you notice the dividers are wider than some of the newer windows. You can order the Simulated Divided Lights (SDL) and go through the same washing issues everyone hates. The best route to look at is the interior grids that are wider than the standard 5/8" ones we usually see today. You can get the grid work in a wider version which resembles the TDL look more from the outside. Just ask your supplier to see the grid samples. Good Luck!!!...See MoreSnap on Grilles anyone?
Comments (8)When my sister built their home in 1992 they ordered mostly Anderson windows with the snap in grills, they were on the inside. They were made to order, there ia a little slot the grills snap into place in. They looked nice but she got really sick of them. She would take them off to clean windows then snap back in place. She felt it was difficult to clean with them in place. She ended up once not putting them back and hasn't had them on for years....See MoreCan we mix window grilles design in a house?
Comments (49)Well cleaning true divided light windows is awful, refinishing them is worse yet! At least they haven't tried to simulate how inefficient the old true divided lite windows are. Even with aesthetics I would take grids between the glass because of how much easier they are to clean and they still give you more character than glass with no grilles. I have debated this topic obsessively with our new build and made the final decision to do grids in all of my windows. It adds character and carries the theme of my house throughout. I looked through many interior/exterior photos of other houses and the grids add just as much inside as they do out, especially at night. I would look for somewhere else to save. Maybe you could go for a simpler garage door in the basement. I would eliminate the chimney altogether to save some money, if you have all of those mature trees still around it will just get lost in that forest of trees! Also from the picture of the original house, it looks great (minus the hole in the roof) and I didn't see a chimney on it....See Morewould window grills be a mistake with great views?
Comments (41)The thing is that Brillhart house is not a contemporary design with Florida Cracker-looking elements tacked on. Its a completely contemporary house that utilizes the same sort of anti-technology aspects for cooling and ventilation and since those thing work for a traditional cracker they used them here, and that pretty much determines the shape of the house (except it has a flat roof) It's closer in form to Farnsworth House, it's just that Farnsworth house was not designed to be well ventilated and I don't think the orientation of the deep porch considers the sun, I am not sure. (However Edith Farnsworth did convert the porch to a screen porch during her lifetime. It looked like crap but it prevented her from living inside a solar oven to some extent....See More- 8 years ago
