I dug up my Agave - whew!
I've had this Agave desmettiana variegata crowded against a wall behind my yuccas. I couldn't get in to weed or remove pups.
So today I finally took my time and dug up the middle one.
I didn't take it very far. It is resting in a shady spot. Tomorrow I will decide whether to plant it at the other side of my house or adorn the center island at the end of our cul-de-sac.
Now I have a bunch of pups! Some are substantial and some are very small. Everybody has roots.
I'm glad to finally have the job done before they all got too big. They stayed a controllable size when I had them in pots. Boy, they sure took off once I planted them in the ground.
Well, if anyone wants a baby, you know where to find me! You guys know I can't throw a plant away! LOL

Comments (3)I think you need to lay your bulbs out on paper for awhile and let them dry, or they may rot in the basket. Let the tops die and fall away, etc. THEN put them into mesh bags (like onions come in) or nylon stockings and keep them in a cool place for the summer. (Your closet, maybe?) Replant them in the fall. If your beds aren't ready by then, pot them up, or share them with friends. Maybe your friends will give you babies when you're ready for them. The bulbs will die if they stay out of the ground much longer than that. I'd pot them, though. You can pack alot of bulbs into a big pot. You can plant them side by side, almost touching. Comments (14)Lucy... I'm in zone 9 and have had the EE I've had in the ground at this house for 20 years--over that time we had several very cold winters and they all survived. I received mine initially from my BIL who lives in zone 5 and he did pull them out every year, just shook the soil off them--did not hose them down (it is supposed to do with the transpiration & the roots...and soil can act as an insulator??) and then he placed the 'extremely dry' bulb in a double brown bag and stored them in his basement. He has this awesome compost pile and his humungeous plants were over 6 feet tall and the leaves were so HUGE across the surface!!!! Remember the juice from EE can destroy a good shirt!!! 8 years agoNeil - it was a busy day. It took me all day because I kept having to go inside to cool off! But then again, I wasn't in a hurry. And if I don't find homes for my plants, we do have a big plant fair in March. I know, it's a long time off, but it is a great venue for trading - much to the chagrin of those who are trying to sell their plants. When I sell my plants, it is usually for a dollar or two, just to cover the cost of growing media. Sharing is more important to me.
Kim, everything I read says this plant is frost tender and grows in zones 9-11. If you can keep it in a pot and bring it in for the winter, I think it will do fine. These guys were quite manageable before going into the ground.
