Can you buy a free standing tub online?
Comments (30)Stacey- No...as I mentioned in my first post, I got a wall-mounted one for about $400. You can see it in the picture I posted. I like a simple and clean look and the floor mounted ones look like fancy, exposed plumbing to me. If you can run your supply pipes up into the wall, all you need is the valve that's hidden in the wall, like a shower valve, and the spout and and handles that are surface mounted. l also like it because it doesn't take up space, and you don't have to worry about the structural issues that a floor mount sometimes requires, especially if you have to go through tile. My wall mount does go through wall tile, but I prefer that as it seemed easier than plumbing that has to go through and be secured to floor tile. Just my preference, but it made tub filling a whole lot cheaper. P.S.: I could have gotten a cheaper tub, but I preferred getting a name brand I had had good experiences with before. I'm sure that there are good quality tubs out there that sell for less than what I spent, but I'm not an expert on tub brands. I was simply happy spending $1620, as opposed to $3000-6000 locally....See MoreNeed a freestanding tub and freestanding faucet for our home reno
Comments (12)We got a very good deal on a Victoria and Albert tub, but we had also been looking at "vintage tub" and they had some ones that looked nice. We had bought a Pfister faucet to go with it, but it was too low for our tub when they went to install it. Then we were stuck with having to get a faucet which had the same center distance on the pipes and there weren't a ton with the 7" centers so ordered the victoria and albert faucet but it was almost too high above the tub and so so expensive. In the end we got one I really like from vintage tub and looks wise the polished nickel finish and the porcelain on the handle as well as the feel/weight etc. looks just as good quality for 1/5 the price of the V&A one. Haven't really used it yet as it just went in on Friday so can't speak for long term use....See Moreputting in a drain for a freestanding tub.
Comments (8)I am not a plumber or a pro but theoretically I assume you can tie a drain into any existing drain provided that the slope is appropriate. I retrofitted a washer dryer and the lines tie into my shower drain. I live in a high rise which has each units HVAC tied into a central water line which often backed up causing flooding in my unit. When I remodeled, I elliminated the "central" line and had it tied into my guest bathroon sink drain system. I had my tub/shower combination ripped out and a walk in shower installed and that required a different type of drain as shower drains are different than bath drains - even those which are shower tub drains. I guess because if water rises in a tub/shower combination it is less of an issue but I don't really know. Although extremely rare, one of my neighbors remodeled and actually moved the toilet about 8 feet or so. According to my GC, who was friendly with the GC who did my neighbor's unit, they tied into the exisiing toilet drain and made sure it was sloped properly. In order to do that they had to elevate the shower floor a bit as the drain ran under the shower to the old toilet drain. As to what it would cost, you really need to have a plumber come in and give you a true estimate. FWIW, I also think free standing tubs are not a great idea - especially in a normal middle class bathroom where they aren't really free standing. They are difficult to clean around and also difficult to maneuver in and out of unless one is long limbed. They also don't have a place for the accoutrements of relaxing baths as there is no place to put stuff - unlike tubs with ledges. My knowledge of living with a free standing tub is first hand as I had a clawfoot tub in the place I rented for two years in college. I didn't like it then and have no urge to replicate the experience now. I have seen some absoutely gorgeous drop in style tubs on these forums which are more practical. I especially like the ones which are undermounted....See MoreFreestanding tub fillers
Comments (9)We recently had our first freestanding tub installed. I was there with my broom and mop when the plumber measured for placement to ensure both easily fit around all sides. Freestanding fillers take up more space than we had, so we selected a roman style tub filler. It could have gone on the shower's knee wall if we raised the wall a bit, but opted for exterior wall placement instead. (It rarely freezes where we live and this is 100% within code here.) Other options are tubs with built in deck mounting locations like this one Sikome 63 Deck-mount Faucet Installation | Oceania (oceania-attitude.com) or this one Suite 6631 R - 3 skirts | Oceania (oceania-attitude.com) This is our freestanding tub before the shower glass was installed. Oceania Sikome 63. The best part of it is the height and angle of the back rest. 59* recline and about 24" high; perfect for supporting my neck and shoulders while relaxing in!...See Moretsth5236
