How wide is too wide??
Comments (2)There is no too wide for cabinetry from a user point of view. My cabinetmaker put extra heavy duty glides (no soft close, but they don't slam because of the weight in them) on my 48" wide pot drawers. And, of course, heavy enough bottoms for all that cast iron. There is more concern with doors. Somewhere between 22" and 30" they get too wide to hang square without sagging. I have 30" wide cabinets over my fridge and freezer on which I didn't want to split the doors, so I popped for fancy lift-up hinges. No sag. I have a cabinet with extra long shelves which extend into the blind corner by the laundry sink. It's about 60" wide. The doors are only about 18-20" wide, each. As Kaismom mentioned, that's too long for the shelves. I was willing to have them anchored permanently to the wall. Instead, the cabinetmaker put a stile up the back with a line standard support peg holes. He thinks that's plenty to keep sagging at bay, and it keeps the shelves adjustable height....See MoreDrawer hardware size for large/wide drawers (30-38 inch wide)
Comments (10)I used over size pulls on my cabinets. For my drawers, I made a "rule of half". I used pulls that were approximately half as long as the size of drawer. So pretty much the same as ctycdm has. In the picture below the drawers on the left are 24 inches wide with 13 inch pulls. The 36 inch drawers in the middle have 18 inch pulls and the drawers on the right are 18 inches with 10 inch pulls. I also have some 13.5 inch drawers that have 6 inch pulls. Since I like the look of longer pulls, I used 10 inch pulls on the cabinet doors. If you google using the words gardenweb, pull size and drawers you will get lots of posts and pictures. Many GWers have only one smaller pull while others have 2 smaller pulls on wide drawers. It's completely a matter personal preference and sizes available in the hardware you like....See MoreUpper cabinet width - how wide is too wide?
Comments (29)cpartist, I did, I don't like the style. I wanted white and they're all too modern looking for my 1926 bungalow. Janelle Van, look at the comments above, one had a link for a sagulator. If you can look at the specs for Ikea's cabinets and see what material the shelves are made of and how thick they are, you can see how much weight you can put on it before there's noticeable sag. Very helpful! latifolia, the new ones are 36" plus 4" crown. There's going to be about a foot between the crown and the ceiling. I'm okay with it. I need a large step stool to reach anything in my top cabinets now and I'm adding 8 cabinets on the other side of the kitchen where there are currently 0. Way more than enough storage!...See MoreLower Cabinet Drawers Too Wide?
Comments (56)I couldn’t agree more with the latest comments. I only have the best of intensions but at the end of the day, it’s your kitchen. You need to do what works best for you and your family. But I make one my last post for a prep sink. I highly recommend a prep sink on the island as @mama goose_gw zn6OH mocked up with the green lines. You won’t need to cross into the cleaning zone where the kids will be working WHEN you need access to the sink to rinse vegetables or drain a pot of pasta. Personally, I don’t like the thought of carrying a 5+ gallon stock pot (homemade tomato sauce or chicken stock) and risk burning a small child who runs into my legs. I was that child and I am fortunate I only have a burn scar the inside of my ankle; at least on the my front of my body that I can see. This might be going overboard but you can train your family to call out “HOT BEHIND” when ever someone needs to pass through. I come from a large family who likes to cook. I have 3 sisters, 2 foodie BILs, a mom and MIL. We trip over each other in the kitchen and push our way through each other to access to the sink whenever we try making a meal together. As kids I didn't really notice the lack of a prep sink but as adults, I find it more pleasant to cook with them when we each get our own sink. One person can be prepping while another person is washing up. And there’s aways a free sink to wash hands or rinse a glass. It was one of my many must haves. If you still don’t see the need for a prep sink, please at a minimum, look into how much work it will be to add into later if you change your mind down the road. Like, how will it be vented and drained. Do you need a new drain stack or can they tie it into the existing sink drain. Will you have odd shaped bulk heads in the room below the kitchen. Also I’m very glad to hear you’ve decided to move the microwave out of your prep zone. You don’t want someone trying to open the microwave while you're working with a sharp knife in your hands. I know; I'm over the top. I worked in a kitchen before so I’ve seen my share of cuts and burns......See Morehouserookie
