RRD Again
Comments (12)I took some pictures because we always want to know, is it RRD. I was sure about this one. Here is a good picture of two RRD affected canes and in the middle a healthy one: You can see that the healthy one is smooth, straight, the buds are not distorted, the leaves are not curled, there is a normal amount of growth. The RRD canes have too much growth, distorted buds, curled leaves and the canes were very soft and weighed down by the amount of growth. These canes were so soft, I could pull them right off the main cane. There isn't that much of a color difference, which is why I probably didn't notice it sooner. Here is another picture: A tell-tale sign is too many new canes or laterals coming from one cane. Here there are three coming from the same bud eye. Not normal....See MoreRRD is back...again!
Comments (9)MaryLu, I'm wondering if this is the same sickness my William Baffin succumbed to last year. I don't remember the name of the disease but it was characterized by lots and lots and I mean lots of tiny thorns. It had been lovely in the first flush that spring but really got to looking sorry and the foliage was diseased looking. A garden expert on TV just happened to describe it one day(a show I don't usually watch) and said to remove it immediately and not to plant another rose there. I did that and so far my other two climbers are not hurt by this condition. The only thing wrong with them is they have been swallowed alive by clematis vines. I had a mental picture of roses blooming with a little bit of clematis winding through. Not so.I had a mass of clematis jackmani and etoille violette with a puny little rose vine that barely survived. I plan to severely cut them back next year so they will hopefully not turn into the vine that ate the south I mean the rose. VB...See MoreRRD yet again?
Comments (16)It did look very thorny and had the candelabra shape. Feeling the thorns at first was alarming because they felt soft. I realized I was not in the habit of feeling new growth thorns. I felt other "normal" looking canes on other roses and the newest growth was also soft. I note MW is a very thorny rose I realize and once the new growth stretched out it looked better I thought. I think distorted leaf margins were not noted. I could also comment this is a grafted DA MW and my only one, so I really didn't know what it typically does....See MorePossible RRD on Gallica---Your opinions, Please
Comments (4)Hi again, Belmont. I traveled to the garden dot org site to check out your photos. As others such as Patty have noted, there are a number of odd features, probably the same ones that caught your attention. I'd be VERY cautious with growth like that. I noticed that Christopher suggested cutting out the entire cane and waiting to see what comes up. At the very least, I'd do that. Since you are so on top of your garden, this method sounds like it might be a reasonable one if you wish to save a special rose and have a calm disposition that doesn't lie awake and worry at night. (Yes, me. I'm talking about me.) :-) If there was herbicide spraying in your area that might be the issue. I've not seen herbicide damage that looks exactly like your photo, but I've also never seen herbicide damage on a Gallica, only newer cultivars. Please do let us know how things unfold. Wishing you all the best! Carol...See MorePoorbutroserich Susan Nashville
