Belmont, try posting it now, in the comment section below. That has worked well for several of us struggling with the "new and improved" GardenWeb/Houzz. The photos seem to attach in a smaller version, but they can be enlarged with a click. Carol

Hi again, Belmont. I traveled to the garden dot org site to check out your photos. As others such as Patty have noted, there are a number of odd features, probably the same ones that caught your attention. I'd be VERY cautious with growth like that. I noticed that Christopher suggested cutting out the entire cane and waiting to see what comes up. At the very least, I'd do that. Since you are so on top of your garden, this method sounds like it might be a reasonable one if you wish to save a special rose and have a calm disposition that doesn't lie awake and worry at night. (Yes, me. I'm talking about me.) :-) If there was herbicide spraying in your area that might be the issue. I've not seen herbicide damage that looks exactly like your photo, but I've also never seen herbicide damage on a Gallica, only newer cultivars. Please do let us know how things unfold. I've seen rrd on several gallicas. One had curved stems, one side growing faster than others. And the curved stems leaves were not like the rest. Blooms weren't developing as they should have. We saved that one by isolating the stems supported the odd growth and leaving behind the unaffected growth. (The underground spread of gallica roots,,,,,so orderly...worked in our favor.)

On another the blooms were not developing in an orderling fashion and the bush had blooms on the inside where there was no sunlight hitting.
