I Love Modern Roses that Copy Old Rose Stye
Comments (14)Jacques Cartier is a portland, very healthy, good repeat, fragrance and tolerate rain much better than Comte de Chambord. Modern or old roses this is a very good rose, I promise :-) Gruss an Archen is very worth planting, old rose form but with genes from hybrid teas and hybrid perpetuals. There is a yellow rose Candlelight (Tantau 2001), very healthy, shiny dark green leafs, very fragrant with full, large flat flowers. It is something between a shrub and a hybrid tea in form, very shapely, grows rather large, 3 feet with some pruning in spring. Blooms nonstop no matter what the weather is like. I also like Clair Renaissance and Helena Renaissance from the Danish breeder Poulsen. There are several Renaissance roses to check out....See MoreWild Rover, and other dark mauve/purples
Comments (8)Kim, I already do have RinB. It's maybe in it's 3rd year, repeating nicely (but the weather has been quite clement so far; only one week of loathsome heat, and we even got...RAIN!!!!!!!!). For some reason, I don't like it as much as I think I should; a certain lack of delicacy in overall colour effect? not sure, but it doesn't make me almost "swoon" with delight the way Purple Skyliner does,or General Stefanik (too bad that's a once-bloomer. Other favourites: Excellenz Von Schubert, Raymond Privat...I'm trying Lavender Friendship, too, but plants too young still for me to have an opinion. Also, this Rosengarten Zweibrucken looks like a winner,colour-wise at least, but again, plants too young for me to form a real opinion. Instead, I think Perennial Blue may end up as a candidate for The Shovel. Healthy and vigorous, but the flowers lasted so briefly and were fried and ugly-ish; kind of stunted even...and the temperatures were basically pretty moderate here, by recent standards. There are still so many on my wish list, especially if you start counting the once-bloomers... bart...See MoreWhy no dark purple HTs?
Comments (13)Abracadabra starts as a dark red and fades to a purple. The blooms last so long that it still looks good once it has turned purple. Mine has only had two blooms and so far it hasn't had stripes. I have Intrigue and it is a floribunda, not a hybrid tea. The last couple of blooms from it actually started out red and only turned purple a day or two later. I like Ebb Tide but the blooms have been more pink this year than they were last year. I'm not sure why. Ebb Tide is a real purple under the right conditions. My current favorite purple is an Austin called The Prince. It starts out reddish but fades to purple in about a day. It lasts for a while and becomes more purple as time passes. It smells good too. I'm still waiting for Rhapsody in Blue to bloom. It looked good at the nursery but mine was from Heirloom and is taking a while to start blooming so I haven't been able to judge it yet....See MoreComparing a few dark purple-y pink/red roses that hold color well
Comments (23)Cori Ann, how wonderful to line up these lovelies for a little beauty pageant and some easy comparisons. I love them all, but only grow Young Lycidas. I'd go for Falstaff, but Munstead and The Prince will have to do for me and my lack of space. However, I'm nuts about Pretty Lady. I need a large bloomed HT with long stems for bouquet making. This is something I've neglected, and she would fill the bill, I think. And Polarnacht is so fabulous. It can certainly compete with the roses. Diane...See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
