Possibly the deadliest disease ever for roses in the U.S.
Comments (1)It's certainly the deadliest thing to ever hit MY roses. When we moved to the country, all I had time and evergy for were Knockouts, but there were five HTs here when we bought the place. I put in two dozen bushes five years ago. In the last year, I've removed six, and now I have two more that have to go. The HTs got it as badly as the Knockouts. No prevention, no cure, very sad. I unwittingly spread it with my pruning shears when I was cutting back a bush that looked "funny" in late winter 2011. I neglected to sterilize the pruner between bushes and thank heaven, I only had time to do five more before a warm spring leafed out all the others and I decided not to finish them....See MoreDisease free roses
Comments (13)We had such a bad start on gardening this year with the horrible spring, and hot summer. By the time the weather was nice, I was in school, and did not have the time I needed. Now I have begun weeding enough to get through to see my roses, and they all have black spot. I live in an area of the country where black spot is a problem, and with my neglect it is even worse. Crepuscule, and Rev d' Or have it. All of my Bucks and almost all that I can see easily have spots. The only ones without it are the ones I mentioned earlier. This means that with neglect they can all get disease. That is not a great discovery. I want to stop using chemicals, but my solution is probably to wean the roses off of them. Instead of every two weeks, I could go to once a month. Then after that I could go to 2 or 3 times a season besides in the beginning and end. I wrote my earlier post in haste since I was so discouraged to look at the yard. Once you neglect your garden, the first thing is to get a path. I resent the time that took since I still did not get into the beds. Now looking around, I have a real mess. I did always see that they were watered well, but that is about all. Now I need to spray one more time if I don't do anything else. I appreciate your posts, and do have a copy of Jean's list. Must go. THanks Sammy...See MoreMy Garden is a Death Trap for Plants! Disease?
Comments (18)Well, let's see now. Some plants are not affected at all. Sweet potatoes grow well. Regular potatoes get yellow, wilt and die in about July. Wife is always asking why we only have new potatoes and I tell her the tops died so there's no point in leaving them there. Oddly, this spring the radishes looked great, but did not have bulbs, mostly only tops. Weird. Strawberries planted next to the rhubarb seem fine, low fruiting but at least not diseased. There could be sunlight problems, certainly a declining yield over time from maters and peppers could be explained that way. It does not explain the dead grape, rhubarb, basil, etc. I use my compost reasonably soon after finishing but I don't think it's significantly undercooked. Usually it's at least 6 - 9 mo old. I use a lot of grass clippings and if anything some of my mixes are probably heavy on the greens. I use a shovel full for each tomato, etc. hole so I'm not generally loading the whole bed with a lot of it. I would be surprised if this stuff was tying up N. I will park the solarizing idea gardengal, I'm already planted for this year so wasn't going to do it now anyway. No farming nearby, surrounded by houses for several blocks. Neighbors on that side are 'lawn people' but I believe they spread granules instead of spray. Will check. I will post my container tomato pics, they are gorgeous. Although since they are in store bought potting mix 75 ft. away I'm not sure what that's going to tell us. Thanks for your continued head scratching. It may be a combination of things....See MoreWhat are your Top 5/10 advice for a newbie ?
Comments (66)Val, you, of course, may use any medium you decide upon. But if I may, I would suggest a a "seed starter" mix. Along with the issues of porosity, potting soils can harbor and support fungi. Established seedlings can usually ward-off such problematic issues, but those newly germinated cannot. If all you can get is potting soil, it can work, but it will mean quite a bit more attention on your part, and seed starter is easy to find or build yourself. As far as fertilizers, the choices cannot really be narrowed down until you decide if such personal preferences - like growing organically - is important to your lifestyle and methods. I don't really do containers, so I'll not post on that issue. Good luck....See MoreJennie Sims
