Dishwasher around corner from sink?
Comments (10)Ideagirl - I had this question in planning too. FWIW at the time people noted it would be OK, but I think there are several good points here. It's interesting that there's a bit of a plumbing issue - not insurmountable but not ideal to have that long line. Someone made the point to me to be sure to leave at least one drawer cab space between the corner and the DW drawer. I have a lazy susan in the corner which is just 12". I just went and pulled out a board to simulate the open DW door and indeed it is very tight! Grump. What was(n't) I thinking? And while the pullout may come out a bit, it won't come out fully. So I may just come to rue the design. But what I hadn't thought about and no one caught -- I hadn't even caught it until just now when it was pointed out (we haven't lived in our kitchen yet) is how the DW drawer eclipses the compost pullout. I really like the pullout I got and have plans to attach a third flat drawer on top of the two lower pullout trash and recycle cans. But ... drat it is so true that these will conflict with the DW door I think. Again, I haven't lived in the space yet but just from seeing the layout with the DW to the side, I'm surprised at how not-horrible it seems from a filling-from-sink standpoint. Someone here had noted this so I eventually decided to trust them as it was the best layout for us. But there is also the emptying-angle not to forget. I am not sure what to do about the DW door trash pullout conflict! You've got some time though, and good observations....See MoreAnyone heard of dishwasher across from sink?
Comments (20)Part of the problem with rinsing is that it takes away the food that the enzymes work on, so your dw detergent won't work as well. It's a different kind of detergent than years ago. But I still wouldn't know how to have a dw NOT near the sink. After all, the sink is a good catch area, and I like to be able to wash my hands periodically as I scrape or deal with drippy things. You are going to run into issues with things washed and stored at such great distances. But 2 dishwashers in different areas create different problems... I can pretty much guarantee that things will end up in the 'wrong' dishwasher, at least occasionally, because of trying to load both efficiently. --If you have one that's full but still have dirty dishes sitting in that area, and the other dw is only partly full, you're probably going to want to run the dishes over to the other one in order to get both in operation and get everything cleaned up. Or you have all big things in one area, and all small in another, and to load a dw to capacity, you do best with a mix of both... So some things go from point A to point B, and vice versa. ---Then, you want a utensil or a bowl, and where is it? You first check the storage spot and then you search both dishwashers. If they are next to each other, it's no big deal. If one is around the island and into the other little room, it's a pain. Been there, done it, and won't again. But again, I would allow in your particular case, that you might manage to fill a dishwasher with your baking items and might benefit from a dw in there... and could do it if you were strict with yourself about keeping the utensils and pans in that area and in that dishwasher. It MIGHT work. However, I'm pretty convinced you need a full dw or 2 dw drawers in the cleanup area to handle dishes and the cooking utensils from the stove. But I'm a little confused. Now are you considering leaving the counters at 35"? I don't think it'll be a huge deal with the range. Show us your plan again, so we can see your window issue....See MoreLayout help - where to put sink/dishwasher and TV
Comments (26)Here's an idea. [Click on it to see it bigger] This layout keeps the pantry door where it is for ease of bringing groceries in from the garage and includes a pass-through b/w the pantry and kitchen that has a door. When visiting the pantry, you can put the items for the kitchen on the pass-through counter for later retrieval in the kitchen. In the kitchen, above the pass-through, is the TV mounted at an angle so it's visible for more people/tasks. (More later) Cleanup Zone... The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep and Cooking Zones. Dish storage is across from the DW in the island. There are 54 inches of space for dishes, glasses, silverware. The Trash pullout is contained in the Cleanup Zone.. I toyed with putting it in the island, which is a better location, but I think you need the 24" of space it would have taken from the dish storage on the end of the island more. You don't want upper cabinets, so that means your dishes, etc. will have to be stored in base cabinets. Prep Zone... You have at least two Prep Zones: Primary on the island; Secondary b/w the cleanup sink and range. The island Prep Zone has much more space to work with...25" on one side and over 7 feet on the other side. That 7 feet would work really well for not only large prepping projects, but also for (cookie) baking, crafts, science fair projects, school projects, wrapping gifts, etc. It's a wonderful expanse of space! Both the primary and secondary Prep Zones have a water source - making them each a truly functional Prep Zone on their own w/o having to cross over into the other Prep Zone for water. As your three youngest get older and start helping, you will really appreciate having those two Prep Zones! Cooking Zone... The Cooking Zone contains the range and, on the outside, the primary MW and wall oven. Both the cleanup sink and the island prep sink are close enough to the range to be used for draining pasta - choose the sink to use based on what else is going on in the kitchen. It's adjacent to each Prep Zone so the cooks can easily go from the Prep Zone to the Cooking Zone w/o crossing through the Cleanup Zone, crossing the other Prep Zone, or having to go around the island. The oven is located where it can be used when baking or roasting. No running around the island to put food in the oven or to check on the food or to take the food out of the oven. Snack/Tea/Coffee/Beverage Center... Snack/Tea/Coffee/Beverage Center contains a small MW for heating up snacks. I recommend a MW mounted under the upper cabinet and off the counter to keep the counter clear. There is also an under counter Beverage Cooler/Refrigerator for keeping drinks and other refrigerated snacks. There's plenty of storage for silverware, dishes, and mugs in the area for ease of access. If you drink coffee, you could even put a coffee maker there. ......See Morethinking about doing away with the dishwasher
Comments (30)We are just finishing a kitchen (and over 1/2 of the house) remodel. 10 years and no dishwasher, and I never really missed it. Only once, when we had a particularly big party that I cooked Chinese style for, then I missed it. So we just finished a remodel and had a dishwasher installed. We got to trying to make some improvements in the efficiency and functioning of the home, some which have already proven sort of indifferent in some ways. For example, the hot water on demand is lovely - however we are in a severe drought and water runs for some time in the kitchen before it is warm... We priced 18" dishwashers. None were available locally here so to have one shipped it cost more than a similar quality regular dishwasher. We priced drawers, and they were almost twice the cost of a top of the line dishwasher. I wanted one that was seamless and integrated. After all, this is my "Dream" kitchen - I do not plan on having the kitchen renovated again!! We did not consider re-sale as the renovation was not done for a resale, it is completely custom with vintage appliances, light fixtures and cupboards and unusual color combinations. But I decided that I'd be entertaining way more now that I love our home, and that a dishwasher would be very useful. We chose one that is top of the line, about triple what I had planned to pay - because of the quality. I bought it from a "high end" dealer here who I know would give me great customer service if there was a problem with it. I chose the more expensive model because I can run bottom or top only loads. It uses less water than hand washing, and has two different energy saver cycles. The salesman had a similar dishwasher, same brand, and said they don't use theirs much - but it never fails them when they do. And it gets the dishes & pots REALLY clean. Haven't been able to use it yet as we are still waiting on counters and the stove ventilation to be completed, however the single cycle we ran seemed to do a fine job... girlgroupgirl...See Morekajameade
