The tall rose on the far right, barely visible, is a huge Chloris. The darker pink in the middle is the bourbon Heroine de Vaucluse, the red gallica to the left is Assemblage de Beaute with Duchesse de Montebello and Leda behind. The white rambler on the midddle arch is Polstjaernan, a beggeriana hybrid, probably the hardiest of ramblers. I don't much care for it but I had to have something on at least one of the arches when I first put them up. Ispahan is the pink behind it. The very dark red rose on the other side of the arched walk is Nuits de Young. There are many more roses on that side....See MoreNashville, TN, area rose garden(s)/cemeteries that have roses?
Comments (5)I live near Franklin and I vote for Cheekwood! Although I admit it has been awhile since I've been to the gardens at The Hermitage. I will warn you though that the end of April is usually juuuuuuust at the beginning of rose blooming here. Cheekwood would be hedging your bets because it will be lovely regardless if the roses are doing a show yet or not. So far we are warming up nicely so hopefully you'll have something to see. Both Cheekwood and the Hermitage will be slightly out of your way between the two areas--Hendersonville is north of town, Franklin to the south--and they would both be a 20 minute jog. If you are really tight for time try Carnton Plantation/Mansion in Franklin. They've done tremendous work over the last few years renovating their historic garden and I believe it may have some old roses--but the gardens aren't really about roses. Carnton I believe also has the largest private cemetery in the U.S. and it was central to the Battle of Franklin in the Civil War. (Mrs. McGavock took it upon herself to bury the dead on her property after the battle. ) So lots and lots of history and it's about 5 minutes from the square in downtown Franklin, Gardens with a few roses, a cemetery and convienent!!...See MoreAre old garden roses hungrier than modern roses?
Comments (7)No, I wouldn't dig them up. If your drainage is sufficient, I'd mulch well with the appropriate organic mulch for your climate and conditions. You may want to do a soil test to determine what might be missing before you do anything. But, adding organics to the surface of the soil where they will encounter heat, moisture and oxygen to feed the soil bacteria and fungi so they digest them, releasing Humic Acid and nutrients which will be washed through the root zones and soil should do the job. Depending upon what and how much you used, the issue could well be that there is too much organic material in the planting area and it isn't breaking down appropriately. Remember that organic material buried under ground in landfills generates hydrogen sulfide and methane, both of which kill plants and add to climate change. Putting the organics on the surface where they digest instead of forming toxic gases allows the plants to make the best use of them....See MoreRoses in the Nan Elliott Memorial Rose Garden
