Grafting onto a new bare root fruit tree questions
Comments (5)John: I like your plan except I can't do a whip&tongue on that short of a stub. I've had very good luck with W&T but would need several more inches to work with. Then if the W&T fail, T bud in May on that same stub or a new sprout as soon as the wood turns from green to reddish. I'd do the W&T when the tree first starts to push leaves, probably March where you are. I've had great luck with T budding in May and forcing after 2 weeks if the bud takes. I'd keep more laterals and space them out up and down the trunk. It won't hurt to do two or three of each W&T and the same on budding if needed later. As long as you cut back on all remaining laterals, the tree will be fine starting out with 9-12 branches. Latter select the best of each variety....See MoreGrafting and Pruning Question
Comments (5)I would also cut the lower branches. I am a novice at grafting adeniums and haven't done that many but they seem to take more easily then other plants I've tried. I might be tempted to wait until March to try your grafts just in case you have another unusually cool winter. It was cold as &*%! down there a couple years ago. I'm used to the occasional cool winter day in S. FL but it was cold for weeks at a time. I felt like I was back home instead of in West Palm!...See MoreAmbitious Grafting idea.
Comments (2)never heard of it being done accept this one little article. the only things in the legumes family i have tried to graft are royal ponciana and tamarind with no luck on any of them but maybe the beans being more herbaceous they will graft. there is a lima relative cannot remmber the name of it that has been known to live for 3 years and up to 7 years. wonder if a bush bean grafted to that would help make it more perrineal if they are even close enough related to be graft compatable. i say if you have the space and beans to experiment with give it a try. Here is a link that might be useful: this is the only thing i came across in a search...See MoreThree week grafting update and questions inc. bud grafts
Comments (18)Jinny, I am sure you will be a star at it. The only reason I decided to take the plunge and try at the last minute was because I saw those mandarins with such fresh, healthy stems on them. I figured I’d buy they anyways to eat and try out with those little twigs. I never dreamed so many would still be alive today. Sunshine, thank you both for your guidance and inspiration. Your thread of grafting the store-bought twigs is what motivated me to try. Dave, Sunshine knows about this and I think what she says is true about cleft grafting. However, I think as Silica explained above with the bud grafting: the upper part of the tree needs to be below the leaf node for it to leaf out. I know fruit mentor first bends it down (like Steve showed), and once the bud has grown, cuts it off entirely....See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
