vinyl replacement windows/please help!!
Comments (5)I was choosing double hungs just because I like their more traditional look. Whats your opinion on sliders vs casement. I'm assuming casement is the better window but is it crucial ? I've heard of all the window styles sliders are the lowest quality, I'm guessing the worst "seal" when closed?? My gut is telling me not to go with DH, but do I go with the more expensive casement or will sliders be just as good? and do you have an opinion on silverline?...See MoreProblems with doublehung vinyl replacements
Comments (1)Sounds like there is a problem with the balance system. Remove the sash and you will notice it has pivot pins attached at the bottom. Now look at the window frame. On each side you will see the balance system. Notice a slot that the pivot pins slip into and see if they are turned upward so the slot accepts the pivot pin. If not, get a large flat head screwdriver and see if you can turn it so the slot is facing up, then try and insert the sash pivot pins into the slot. If this doesn't work, re-post the best detailed description of the the type of balance the window has and I'll try to help you further or take a picture of it and send it to my email....See MoreWhich Brand Vinyl Replacement Windows?
Comments (3)Does the installer also handle window brands? Most do. If so, what does he/she recommend? Very simply, there are several good brands of windows with excellent warranties. However, IMO, the windows are only as good as the installer who will stand behind their work. You want to look at the E value of the windows and the level of insullation in the frames. I highly recommend double hung windows that tile inward for ease of cleaning. My Plygem windows also have screens so I can raise the windows for ventilation. Don't know where you live, but location of the installers often limits selection of brands....See MoreWhat brand vinyl replacement windows? Best window for the money?
Comments (19)vic, if you are unable to locate one of the brands that are universally well regarded by pros, my best recommendation would be to take a close look at performance ratings. You can look at window performance the same way you look at mileage and horsepower when buying a car. U factor and air leakage are two big ones... There is a little complexity when it comes SHGC and others as the optimum numbers can vary based on climate, but the these ratings are a great guide either way....See More- 9 years ago
