Brady, I have two Chippewas and last year they had so many berries that I had to hand remove the entire crop because I was afraid it was going to kill the plants. All of the berries were about the size of a huckleberry. I will say though that my plants had far more berries than this one. I would agree with what others have said, remove some of the lower blooms and leave those further up. A nice looking plant, yours are ahead of mine by quite a bit. None of my plants have even started to do anything yet. RM

You are probably right fruitnut, but I dont know how much longer I can go with out sleep dwelling over my poor little plant! Ive checked the ph 4 times the last two weeks and on all 4 sides of the plant its 3.2 to 3.7 and thats about 5 inches into the soil. When I first planted this particular plant I did add a couple table spoons of Iron Sulfate in a ring about 18 inches from the cain. The roots have now grown out to about that distance and this is where I have been taking my readings. I need to test up closer to the base of the plant but I would die if brake some roots and kill the poor thing. On top of that I also added 1/2 cup of sulfer to the top layer. I think I might have gotten alittle carried away with acidifiers. This was all about 3 months ago so wont the ph continue to fall for a few more months?

Fruitnut, Have you ever seen a BB plant that was showing harm from a too low PH? I have read in the literature that too low of a PH can damage them just have never seen it. Curious if you have. I don't have a lot of faith in ph meters. Perhaps the several 100 dollar ones are better. I still remember the ag agent coming to the farm professing the value and need of scientific ph tests. My grandfather picked up a pinch of soil poured it in his mouth and said young man I have a ph meter built in, why would I need you to test it? The look on the fresh out of college ag agents face was priceless.

You'll probably increase the size more by pruning now than thinning berries later. Cut out all the low, weak wood and some of the smaller upper wood. Then if needed shorten the remaining small wood so that there are less flower clusters on each branch. You want to reduce the number of flower clusters by at least 50%, maybe even two thirds. This will result in larger, sweeter berries.
