Too many Blueberry buds?

This is a Chippewa that I bought last Fall after it had fruited.It had lots of leaves and looked very healthy.

Right now the flower buds are about to open and there are many.My questions,Are there too many and should they be left to fruit and then removed or taken off now if too much or should some pruning be done.

I did prune a bit about a month ago. Thanks,Brady

Trying to transplant about 50 mysore black raspberries today and the rain keeps chasing me in.

I would thin it some but not drastically. I would debud those low growing horizontal limbs....well actually I would just remove those twiggy limbs entirely. On the rest of the limbs thin to 6 fruit clusters.

Doesn't look like that much fruit to me. If it's a variety that leafs out well I'd not remove any. But taking a bit off isn't wrong. I just don't think it necessary unless you are really choosy about fruit quality. Even then with good leaves thinning probably won't change quality much.

mishko: As I understand you, the new site will be overrun with weeds in October. Could you spend the summer tending the new site, keeping down weeds by mulching or spraying and adjusting pH as needed? I think your plants would be better off moved in October. You could prune some at moving or the following spring. This would provide a better crop this year and still a good crop the following year. I think waiting to move would provide more fruit and be easier on your plants. However if your winters are severe, it might be better to move now and take most of your fruit loss this year. Hey Toots, Pls. remember they're jungle cacti, they WANT water when active. I'd say check all the way down in the mix w/ a pencil or thin knife. (Like testing a cake for doneness), if the pencil comes out w/ mix on its tip there's still some moisture down below. I'd say as long as you're careful to check, if they dry out in 4, 5 days, maybe give them more water. Or if you're really unsure, maybe mist the mix when you feel you want to water again? I water mine (in a west window) every wknd, maybe every 10 says when I forget. In summer I water maybe every 5 days or so.

Thanks, Dax and Bluespruce! Yes, Mirek's Picea pungens 'Olo' has that too. So nothing new, but for me it is new. Dax, you say 'a grafter's dream' probably because you will have a lot of scions. So it seems I simply have to see and remove some new growth in spring. It seems that there might have been 5 new extended buds in May, and after each got frozen off the plant created 5x5 new buds. Hello, Jim. They definitely look normal from a bloomage standpopint! No need to worry about that. My first thought when reading your message was iron chlorosis but your pictures clearly show that the veins are not dark green but light greenish. Then I observed that the leaves in direct contact with the sun are a lighter shade of green than those leaves in the interior. It is hard to tell if that is caused by shade in the picture or not but, it made me think of sunscorch. When the leaves in direct contact with the sun get too much sun, they turn a lighter green and eventually look all yellowish (including the leaf veins). Down here in Texas, I provide shade starting around 11am to 12pm to prevent that. But I once had a storm damage a tree that provided shade to the leaves and had to dream a contramption to give them shade. I would not use the fertilizer for this problem. Generally speaking, fertilizer applications on stressed plants are not recommended. Besides, hydrangeas are not heavy feeders. In the northern half of the country, you can do with one application in June (I am guessing that is where you are located); see the link below. A cup of compost, composted manure or cottonseed meal per application should be enough. Have you ever had a soil test done? Soil tests can indicate mineral defficiencies that can make the leaves turn yellow and which are not easily diagnosed by us gardeners. Hey Brady,

My plants looked like yours with alot of fruitbuds. I did thin my plants hard this year only because its there first year fruiting. Of course I probably went over board with thinning the fruit buds. I left 4 fruit buds per branch and thinned the branches out too. I should still get some fruit this year but I was worried about stressing them out and stem blight. Next year will be a different story as will let them fruit alot more. Thats a great looking plant though!

Brady,

I have two Chippewas and last year they had so many berries that I had to hand remove the entire crop because I was afraid it was going to kill the plants. All of the berries were about the size of a huckleberry. I will say though that my plants had far more berries than this one. I would agree with what others have said, remove some of the lower blooms and leave those further up.

A nice looking plant, yours are ahead of mine by quite a bit. None of my plants have even started to do anything yet.
