What to expect from too many buds?

Hi,

I would like to ask what I should expect next spring from this mass of buds on this Abies grandis 'Van Dedem's Dwarf'.

I live in zone 5a and last May received from the Pacific Northwest several dwarf conifers which already showed small new tender growth. After planting these extended buds then all froze off during several frosts the next days. Though pines, Abies koreana and Picea omorika all created new growth, this Abies grandis only created new buds.

At this one branch location there must be 25 buds. I could wait to next spring and then see what will happen, but usually there is always a lot of work then, and I might miss to act. I would like to know now what to expect. I plan to remove then all active (swollen) buds except four. Is this OK?

Are some of these buds leading to pollen cones? This plant is probably much to young to have cones next year.

Is this plant to tender for my zone, because it did not create new growth last May?

Will this plant shed the excessive buds?

Occasional multiple bud set is normal for this cultivar.

Don't give up yet! I'm in Zone 4 also, and last week finally saw the first significant round of tomatoes set (besides cherries, which I've had for about a month). If the weather cooperates, we might be okay - even if it means ripening on windowsills, as mentioned above. I have one very awkward Cherokee Purple that is gigantic (and green as can be), but the rest are very small and have only been around for 7-10 days. Some of my neighbors who water with more intense ertilizers have much smaller, thin plants with lots of tomatoes set. Mine were planted into composted beds, with some liquid seaweed applied earlier in the season. It sounds like our tomato plants are in the same boat. Here's hoping the weather works with us - don't give up!

Some gardeners de-bud the new plants (take off all the buds) for the first few months or even for the entire first season--supposedly so that the plant will concentrate on growing a good, dependable root system instead. Most rose gardeners I know do not do that. My roses settle in fine and grow good roots and put out beautiful blooms without all that fussing. Another reason that some people selectively take out one or a couple buds is because they are "exhibitors" at the rose contests and selective de-budding like that encourages the rose to produce bigger, and hopefully award-winning, blooms. If you grow roses primarily to be enjoyed in your own garden--like I do--you actually want to do the opposite--you do everything you can to maximize the number of blooms -- so that the roses will make a big show in your garden. Different strokes for different folks, you know. : ) I advise you to just make sure the roses are watered and getting enough sunshine--and after they start putting out some good healthy leaves, feed them with a fertilizer like Rose Tone or Osmocote. You can fix it if the k46 dies... few hundered bucks.... I have a K66 sitting on my shelf - as a spare. It bolts on, with some odds and ends. The K66 was $250. The odds and ends another $100, and 1"-shaft wheels from deere, another $100. This in effect would turn my L120 into a G110 (with a 48" deck - instead of the 54). Basically $500 total. My K46 has 250 hours of "hard labour" pulling harrows, spike aerators, and trailers loaded with firewood up hills, and my all-time favorite: 4 yards of pea-gravel, 1-yard at a time - in an regular trailer. That's right: 1 YARD. Over 2500 lbs. Can you say: "You wanna hear the tranny moan?"... of course I did not pull that trailer up any significant hill (it would just stall out). I changed the tranny oil at 150 hours... will again at 300. There is no sign of the tranny getting weak, slowing down, etc... In a way I almost can't wait for the thing to break - so I can put the K66 in there sooner. In fact... I am itching to just do it. I also have a used K46 sitting on the shelf too - but I am thinking of just getting rid of it. Here is a link that might be useful: get your K66 or K62 here

Hi Oakley - Several experts, have already chimed in & posted reassurances & advices, that I have learned & still learning from, in over the few years I have been reading & inquiring, in this truly great forums. Since you wish to know as well, what you might expect from your newly planted ES over the years. I planted 2 (2-gal) pots in '06, moved 3 times before presenting themselves as rewarding as the pics I'm posting. In my zone, like Alisande's ES & gg148's clarifications, my ES can be influenced dramatically by what 'Ma Nature' doles us. This past Winter was one of our worst one, killing even very established trees & shrubs ... Spring was absolutely crazy, 2 wks of heavy rains followed immediately by 2 weeks of sun/steamy heat of 100s (enough to steam cook many barely lushing/blooming perennials)! That said, both ES still budded & blossoms were huge, but significantly less than, what you'll see in the link. To date, a few more cluster buds are showing! However both bushes have grown tremendously, despite dying to the ground ... like Alisande's - not protected in Winter any longer, as they are now older (I did in their first season-using cardboard method). Yes, Mirek's Picea pungens 'Olo' has that too. So nothing new, but for me it is new.

Dax, you say 'a grafter's dream' probably because you will have a lot of scions.

So it seems I simply have to see and remove some new growth in spring. It seems that there might have been 5 new extended buds in May, and after each got frozen off the plant created 5x5 new buds.

I wouldn't be surprised if a strong leader will appear next year at that place.

B.t.w. this plant isn't a true Abies grandis, it's a cross with Abies veitchii.
The true name is Abies grandis x 'Van Dedem's Dwarf'.

Other names which I came across for this cultivar are:
-Abies grandis 'Van Bedem's Dwarf'
-Abies grandis 'De Lange'
-Abies veitchii 'Dwarf W.B. Seedling'

Hi Berndynz,

I'd just graft that... make a plant almost immediately!
If a leader popped up, I'd cut it off.

I changed the name in my files with including the x.
So I should leave the plant as is in spring, probably will become bushy and get more substance, will see. I do not want any leader, would cut that off. Thanks again!
