Evergreen plumeria

hi

A pic of what I believe is a Plumeria pudica usually referred to as evergreen but is much different than the "singapore Hybrids It does have a strong aroma which doesn't fit the description Raised this from a 3 inch twig and was stepped on ,frozen went underwater, and squirrels use it for a gymnasium often damaging the flower heads

Anyway it is rather attrative this year lol gary

Yes, they tend to grow tall and slender, rather than to spread out tree-like as the others do. I've got one (my first) that's over 5 metres tall. Of course all the flowers are up top. A palm frond dropped and broke a small branch off. So I leaned it up against a tree in the garden trying to work out where it could be put as a cutting. Then forgot about it. It's still in the same spot but about 2 metres tall now. They're both flowering away madly at the moment.

I have lots of cuttings of this unique plumeria. I am looking for: ditch lilies amaryllis not red agapanthus especially white aristolochia fimbriata black surnam cherry michelia figo hedychium vanilla ice aglaia odorata alstoemeria's that like heat named orchids edibles I don't have hand made items things for my chicken coop chicken related items I can be tempted with anything fragrant, edible or beautiful that does well in zone 10. Laura it was your picture I saw on the forum, that made me want a Black Tiger, also Lani and Makaha Sunn. I actually ordered all three in January. I changed my mind after I read about it, and asked Carol about it. She said it was beautiful, but she had much better bloomers. I think Black Tiger is probably the prettiest red plumeria I have seen. I think in your area and cooler areas it would be a great plant and preform great. I checked the internet and in 2011 in San Antonio we had 57 consecutive days without rain, and 42 days with temps 100 degrees and above, I was not able to find this information for Rockport where all my plants are. Rockport is 177 miles South of San Antonio, where it is usually hotter, I think I made the right decision. I hope that someone in south texas who bought the plant in Corpus Christi or Brownsville would post how the plant has done for them. I would love to find out that it is a great bloomer, and has large inflos, I would buy it in a minute. Lizzi, a dwaft plumeria grows from 2 ft to 4 ft tall, usally grown in pots, low grower would probably grow from 4 ft to 6 ft. I saw Mardi gras growing in a pot at Florida Colors it was about 5 ft tall. Most of her plumeria are large trees, she gave me a tour using a golf cart. Tavimh - metal halide for growth, rooting, & produces decent blooms. Hps for inflo onset. Me personally, I'd go for a high quality led, they are more expensive up front, but cheaper over the long haul. They provide a superior light spectrum to either of the previously mentioned lights! If you go this rout......be ware of cheep Asian knockoffs, they're all over ebay! The closer your light cycle is to 24hrs on, the better they will do! Peace & happy growing, Jason

Hi

Have you found them to be "evergreen"?? I find they undergo a dormant period no matter the weather but is much shorter than regular plumeria.

Ever see any flower color besides white variations?? I keep hearing about pink,yellows ,bi colored but never see them .. gary

Mine are fully leafed all year, same with the ones I see elsewhere around the place. But the flower colour is always white. Have wondered whether they might come in other colours myself.

One of the "usual" type ones that I have also keeps its leaves all year, flower colour is white with yellow centre and very fragrant.

i googled "evergreen " plumeria and found a nursery not 25 miles from me that listed 25 different colors. 12 growth habits and 30 different aromas lol

Also color changing ,varieagated with a choice of white ,striped, mottled yellow and and tri colored foliage . Also grafted bicolored with up to 4 colors on the same plant !!

250 varieties of deciduous lol i guess there are other kinds lol

I came across what I think is the name of my "usual type" one that remains evergreen, P. obtusa "Singapore".

Hi

Here is a pic of the one I planted in my neighbors yard many years ago Over 25 feet and still growing Definitely NOT evergreen lol They planted a royal poincianna on the other side bright pink mixed with the orangish effect

I also have Plumera pudica, spotted it at a nursery about 10 years ago. My first grew to about 4 metres (around 10 feet), straight up - no (perhaps a little) lateral growth - before it was destroyed by the remnants of Cyclone Oswald in 2012. I took a few stems and now have 2 more. Both are definitely scentless. By the way, P. pudica does not suffer from frangipani rust, and, at least in warmer climates, is rarely without a flower.

I've noticed that with mine as well. No rust and seem to flower most of the time.
