Exterior Door HELP/ADVICE needed

We are replacing our 1966 front door and side light. The current door is a flat panel wood still in decent shape but some draft in the winter at the bottom. It is very plain and there isn't a window. Next to it is a 24" sidelight/window that is the full length of the door. It has some subtle leading in it that you see on the inside but a storm over it on the outside so no one really sees it. This was added by the original owners about 20 years after the house was built. We are only the 2nd owners. The door faces the north in a cold climate. We have a storm door.

The issues - type of door, type of glass (sidelight & maybe door). design ideas???

DH would like fiberglass for the door for energy efficiency and low maintenance. We have an estimate on a Waudena and waiting for the Provia and Homeguard estimates. So far the issues I have is stain colors are limited and our woodwork is more of a (light) mid-tone oak. To me the doors look better the darker stain you go. Some of the mediums look OK. Other fiberglass issue is that there seems to be limitations on sidelight options for our 24" space. The outside will be painted black. We will get a new storm door as well.

Or do we go with wood? Has anyone used torrified wood that has a 20 year warranty against warping etc?

So far for the sidelight it looks like the option is privacy glass with grids or Provia has some Art glass with designs. I am concerned that the painted glass might look too busy and get old after a while. With the price of this and the headache it is giving me, we don't plan to do this again. I am OK with the privacy glass and grids but wandering if any other suggestions. I'm not sure if anything too ornate would fit the house but it isn't Craftsman either and I don't want it to look like a shower door either.

All sales guys have been looking at sidelights for the 24" space rather than windows to keep the stain the same.

We were thinking of a door with a little glass on the top. Could that be leaded with a design if the sidelight is just privacy glass or should they be the same?

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Or if there is a better forum to post this under - please let me know. Thanks.

Your description of orange peel texture leapt out at me but I was confused by your comment that some people have it on their walls, as if on purpose. My recollection was that it was a very bad sign. So I googled "orange peel paint". Apparently it can be a popular wall finish or a defect. I couldn't find anything like the info I found years ago, don't know if I'm using the wrong words or if the terminology has changed. Oh, I just tried again and one website also calls it fisheyes. Is the smell fading? That was the other thing about the problem I remember. Orange peel texture and persistent odor. Aha, yes, they're now calling it solvent-popping. If that's what it is I'd be sanding it very thoroughly. Good luck.

HomeSealed - I ordered my Home Guard door with 2 narrow sidelites. The door is great, outstanding. But after about a week, the stop on a sidelite was bowing, and eventually popped out. I also felt a strong draft from the sidelites. My contractor came back to check it out. The stop was too long. But that wasn't that bad. On closer examination, once the stop was removed, the contractor saw that one of the sidelites' glass had nothing to adhere it to the frame. I.e., if you pushed on it, the glass would have popped out. I may not be explaining this properly, but my contractor was upset at how the sidelites came from the HGI factory, though we agreed the door was wonderful. I waited a few weeks, because my contractor was talking with HGI. My contractor came back and swapped out HGI's single-pane sidelites glass for double-pane, and of course made sure they were installed in their frame properly, and the stops were correctly installed. I had the impression my contractor was doing this at his own cost, though he didn't come out and say that. In conclusion, I would recommend Home Guard doors very highly. It seems as nice as the Provia doors I saw in a Provia showroom, I actually think even nicer. But I'd skip getting sidelites from HGI, and instead get them separately from your local lumberyard or contractor.

My house was hit by a hailstorm and I'm having to make big decisions quickly. I really don't want to screw up - a lot of these decision will have to last 10+ years and each decision might influence the others. I'm very excited not to have a pink house much longer! I'm leaning towards a creamy white with black accents and wood-looking garage doors? Here's what's going on: - the roof has already been replaced and I went with a dark charcoal shingle. From the street you can't really see my roof - New Milgard French Doors were installed in the back. The exterior is black and somewhat modern - There are two big picture windows that are newish - they are white.
