How can I add some color here?? Help me pls.
Comments (37)Oh! They look just like the giant round yews I used to have on the corners of my house. One yew in the yard was removed after we moved in by my very useful DH and I hemmed and hawed and thought about what to do with the others since I didn't want to see DH destroy his back. Well, I finally decided that I didn't want huge bare spots next to the house and have to put something else there anyway. So I went with the major trimming and I really like the result. HERE'S WHAT I DID: I would NOT recommend cutting them back to 2 feet even though eventually they will grow back. The trimming can be done in stages so you are not left with a bare stump. 1) You can cut back the bush hard all over as far as the green goes to leave some green showing. I did this first. Yours look much too tall like mine were. 2) Then, if you look inside the yews, you can see that there is basically a trunk with radiating branches and the green is mostly on the ends of the branches. What I did was to trim off all the lower radiating branches and leave the top of the bush green. The result will be a vase shaped bush. I wanted to make mine narrower to keep off the house siding and because they were blocking the path. The trunk and branches are actually quite attractive and the top can be rounded or shaped naturally or done like topiary if you want. This left a lot of room underneath the bush where I can plant bulbs or anything else. The yew roots don't seem like they are too thick or shallow for other plants. This will let you keep the shrubs, make them smaller, trim them away from the house, and plant more plants in front of them. If you would like a photo, email me and I'll see if I can figure it out. I just dropped in on this forum for a minute, but had to respond. Susan...See MoreNEW: Back to School- Fall Fresh Seed Spectacular Swap 2010
Comments (131)I am back with a question. These did not have the sender's name on the packet so I have to address my query generally. I received a packet labeled simply "creeping yellow daisy". It may be just what I have been looking for. Would whoever sent that please let me know what it is-just the Genus would be a big help! As far as I know it could be a Sanvitalia, Wedelia trilobata, or Chrysanthemum paludosum, but I am sure there are other possibilities. Thanks! Comments (36)A signature doesn't have to be legible - it just needs to be *yours*. As for getting someone to write cursive for you - before my surgery my dh did most of my handwriting for me, or sometimes I'd ask someone else to do it for me - maybe an assistant in a medical office would help me fill out forms, etc. But asking for help isn't easy; some people with physical problems such as I have find it terribly mortifying. My aunt also had a tremor; as her physical condition worsened - she had ET even worse than I currently do (ET is progressive) - she sent Christmas cards with only her signature. Just signing her name was a horrible struggle for her, and she couldn't bring herself to ask for help. Thing is - we may love to see a beautifully handwritten note, signature, or whatever, but not everyone can physically do that. And unless you know the person well, you may not be aware of the challenges (physical, etc) they face/hide. Unless you (generic "you"!) know someone with a challenge like Essential Tremor or Parkinson's, it's hard to fathom just how difficult handwriting can be, or how difficult it can be to ask for help. You wouldn't believe the insensitive comments I have heard about my handwriting problems (never mind the comments about my challenges eating - bah!)....See MoreShould I put lower cabinets in my pantry? Comments (18)"Veering: I think Costco , SAMs, etc can be a quick trip to a fat farm, or a poor house," Yes, if you're an impulse shopper and/or haven't done your homework regarding what works and what doesn't in your family. Just like shopping anywhere, IMO. I love Costco even in a household of 1 person, but I know what I want and don't want, what I'll use and won't use, etc. I buy things that will store well and I will use up (things like dishwasher detergent, garbage bags, contact lens solution, body lotion, batteries, etc). Outsized packaging is something I figured out easily how to deal with back when I had a little kitchen with awkward shelves (2 kitchens ago), and I decant many things (from white vinegar to baking flour) into reusable jars. To each his/her own -- I'm more likely to be an impulse buyer at Home Depot than I am at Costco....See Morepammyfay
