Comments (53)I, too have issues with the Evil trees - I have neighbors on either side who have 2 full grown trees each! I only have space for one dwarf peach tree because of all the shade (I do have several bushes & small trees like Rose of Sharon). I've been here 18 years now and have learned a thing or two about gardening under these trees since it's either the roots putting out the poison or the dripline killing my plants. It took me years to figure out the rain barrels I was using for the veggie garden was truly wiping out my tomatoes & cucumbers every season by the 4th of July & now I use straw bales to grow them so the poison doesn't touch them. I've found a lot of plants they say will work, don't & a lot that do. It's a matter of trial & error. I remove the plants asap when I notice them succumbing to poison & rinse off the roots thoroughly, then plant in new soil elsewhere (If I can save them in time). Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Ive lost all my Columbine except the wild Michigan ones that are protected- my Mom's friend received permission to take some, & I got her "extras", too! So, I'm helping save a protected species while getting columbines in my gardens! Yay!!! Feel free to contact me to ask any questions. Here's a great link to get you started (tho I have plants growing that here say no & plants that should but don't...): https://www.oakgov.com/msu/Documents/publications/oc0280_black_walnut.pdf...See MoreHoya Forum: Support Group or Enablers?
Comments (8)Carolyn your eyes look a little bloodshot are you OK? Ha ha LOL :) I think that if we did not have each other to talk to and to share our plants with we would probably not have so many plants. Being able to share info and make connections has really added to the enjoyment of growing Hoyas. I think as a group we are enablers at times but more often I think we just decide for ourselves that we need this or that plant after seeing a photo or hearing about someoneÂs successes. I know that some of us really have very little space left for more plants but we can't seem to stop making Hoya wish lists and then slowly working our way through them. I made a list last night and it was around 109 species if I remember correctly, a friend sent me their list and it dwarfed mine with a total of almost 400 Hoyas including several duplicates of some hard to find species. Comments (5)I think grieving is a process that one has to go through, no matter what the loss. I also think it's wonderful that people have a group that supports that loss. When I lost my Dear Husband, 5 years ago, I depended on my support group to 'support' me by listening and letting me vent. When I lose one of my pets, I certainly hope I can find such a group to support me. Luckily, I have friends nearby that can relate and will listen to my grieving/venting....See MoreThe kitchen stress support group - come here and vent, laugh, cry....
Comments (66)Pardon me while I crash this thread to vent. Today's main vent is tangentially related to kitchens: we designed an eat-in kitchen in our remodel, so our formal dining room is now a guest room, and the workman I'm venting about is doing finish carpentry in that area. He's taking two days to do what should be about a four-hour job, he's been over two hours late each day, and he's pushing me to pay the balance of the job in cash due to some income restriction/tax dodge that's, frankly, not my business OR my problem. I was mildly sympathetic to his plea, but when he emailed at 9.50am for our 10am appointment to say he'd be here at 11am IF he could find parking; then emailed at noon to whine about not being able to find a spot.....let's just say my sympathy dried right up. Today's minor vent: we've been at substantial completion on our kitchen-plus job since December 2014, GC has done about half the punchlist and the longer he waits to do the rest (and get paid his retainer), the more problems crop up: a tile might be lifting off the bathroom floor, a kitchen cabinet door is hanging improperly, we suspect the bathroom vent is not quite doing its job because there's a musty smell that takes a while to build up but is definitely there. Will this danged job EVER end???????...See MoreEric
