mountain ash-------or black walnut?.............
Comments (7)Around these parts, mountain ash-not an actual ash tree but rather, a member of the rose family-can and do occasionally show up volunteer-style. On the other hand, squirrels absolutely go nuts-pun intended-burying black walnuts this time of year. So as far as the likelihood of it being one or the other, I'd rank it a toss-up. The compound leaves of both species do have a superficial similarity but if you can goog up some pics of each type of leaflet, you should be able to discern which it is you've got there. +oM...See MoreHow long does black walnut toxin persist in the soil?
Comments (7)I bought my house 11 years ago because I loved the walnut trees in the back. I also love gardening. Walnut trees produce a type of toxin that is not compatible with most garden vegetables. This is what I did and I have had great results. 1. Tilled up the soil 2. Put down a (organic) barrier such as newspaper, could use black gardeners cloth. 3. Put down a layer of charcoal. My thinking was that if it can absorb toxins in the body it could also absorb them from the soil. (DO NOT USE CHARCOAL THAT HAS CHEMICAL ADDITIVES such as "self ignite") 4. Add landscaping timbers or anything else to make a raised bed. Mine has 3 levels that look like long horizontal steps. The low bed the medium bed and the high bed. 5. I got lots of aged sheep manure (few weed seeds)and put that down. 6. Added peat moss and good black dirt. 7. More aged sheep manure (few weed seeds)and put that down. 8. More peat moss and good black dirt. 9. More aged sheep manure. 10 Tilled the soil OPTIONAL Added sand to areas that I would rotate crops needing more sand. Put a rubber maid trash can that I drilled a hole into the bottom. Then inserted a water control device that can be turned on and off at the bottom. Just drill a hole using the correct size drill bit and put a good silicon caulk around the water control device. Cut a hole in the top of the trash can lid for the rain spout to drain into the trash bucket.(Need a tight seal to prevent insects from breeding) Now you have your modern day rain barrel Using a 3 way adapter I was able to attach 3 soaker hoses and use the water run off from the roof when there is no rain. In the fall I cover the garden with old tarps, table cloths etc. to prevent any toxic droppings from the trees to enter my garden. (walnuts, leafs etc)Dark colored plastic or tarps also help warm the soil in the spring. I do not know if there is any correlation but I also use organic, crop rotation, companion planting and plant by the moon signs or Farmers Almanac. Add a little TLC and LOVE and you will have a great garden!...See MoreHarvesting Black Walnuts
Comments (26)I have lived in this country house for 5 years, I must admit, that as I am throwing the nuts out of my yard into the woods, slipping on them and ruining my lawnmower blades...I have wondered what I could do with all these black walnuts... My whole back yard consists of black walnut trees and now that I feel very good about how to harvest these nuts, thanks to you all, I am not into baking, so here is my question. I am told people would purchase these if I took the time to do it, but is it worth it and also, any idea how much I could get for these little beauties? Oh, and though I knew better, I didnt wear gloves and my hands are a mess.....lesson learned. Ã Thanks...See MoreCan I plant hydrangea near a black walnut tree?
Comments (1)I have 5 ES + 1 PG growing inside of 12-15' radius from the trunk of the black walnut tree for 3 years and everything seems to be fine. To make matter even more complicated I also planted last year a very young climbing hydrangea seedling to grow on that trunk. However, I didn't dug even an inch deep in a soil. Tree was planted on a slight hill and I just gradualy added 4-6-8-10" of the soil to create depth for the planting and planted relatively small plants with root systems that could fit in those 6-8-10" depth. I have no clue what will happen next, will WT poison the hydrangeas eventualy or its roots will stay where they are, but so far everything look absolutely perfect....See Morejibd
