mountain ash-------or black walnut?.............

i was beginning to do some fall cleanup in the veggie garden the other day. i noticed 3 seedlings that have poppped up near my pepper plants. as i looked at the foliage of my neighbors black walnut tree, i thought, hmmmm, appears to be black walnut seedlings. then, the other day, i just happen to glance at a different neighbors mountain ash tree---i began to think, wow, maybe they are mountain ash?

anyway, does anyone know if one can tell the difference? i sure thought the foliage is awful similar between the two.

They could be a mountain ash, they're very prolific. A picture would help a lot.

Watauga County said that trees are bareroot, 18" to 36" inches and have to be picked up in April. I won't be in NC all summer. Could I plant them in the ground in NC and heavily mulch? Or should I pot them and grow in Florida until ready to plant? Asheville is lower and warmer than Boone which is zone 6. I'll be in Asheville in March and will visit the NC Arboretum. You guys are great-keep your ideas coming!

Adam, check out Northern Nut Growers. http://www.nutgrowing.org/ The hybrid Juglans Hindsi X Juglans Nigra aka the Royal hybrid would be worth looking into. There are some walnut diseases that have to be considered. Walnut die back is one that is hitting several areas hard. My advice is to consider carefully whether you want to go through with this, then decide how much acreage to plant. I have 50+ acres of walnut trees planted and have a LOT more work to do on them than I care to think about. Land that grows good walnut tends to be rich fertile bottom land near streams but outside the flood zone. I, too have issues with the Evil trees - I have neighbors on either side who have 2 full grown trees each! I only have space for one dwarf peach tree because of all the shade (I do have several bushes & small trees like Rose of Sharon). I've been here 18 years now and have learned a thing or two about gardening under these trees since it's either the roots putting out the poison or the dripline killing my plants. It took me years to figure out the rain barrels I was using for the veggie garden was truly wiping out my tomatoes & cucumbers every season by the 4th of July & now I use straw bales to grow them so the poison doesn't touch them. I've found a lot of plants they say will work, don't & a lot that do. It's a matter of trial & error. I remove the plants asap when I notice them succumbing to poison & rinse off the roots thoroughly, then plant in new soil elsewhere (If I can save them in time). Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Ive lost all my Columbine except the wild Michigan ones that are protected- my Mom's friend received permission to take some, & I got her "extras", too! So, I'm helping save a protected species while getting columbines in my gardens! Yay!!! Feel free to contact me to ask any questions. Thanks. I found this: Many plants such as tomato, potato, blackberry, blueberry, azalea, mountain laurel, rhododendron, red pine and apple may be injured or killed within one to two months of growth within the root zone of these trees. The toxic zone from a mature tree occurs on average in a 50 to 60 foot radius from the trunk, but can be up to 80 feet. Guess they will have to go somewhere else.

If they are walnut, you can dig a little bit and easily find the shell of the nut. Shouldn't be more than a couple inches below the surface, and likely still attached to the seedling. Also, it's in the back of my mind that walnut leaves have a distinct smell when crushed. Just rub a leaf between your fingers, and compare to the mountain ash or walnut.

If you have several that have come up really close together, I think they are probably ash. Squirrels would have buried the walnuts, and I don't think they'd put that many in the same place. I find pecan trees all the time that they've planted, and there are never more than one in the same place.

Around these parts, mountain ash-not an actual ash tree but rather, a member of the rose family-can and do occasionally show up volunteer-style. On the other hand, squirrels absolutely go nuts-pun intended-burying black walnuts this time of year. So as far as the likelihood of it being one or the other, I'd rank it a toss-up. The compound leaves of both species do have a superficial similarity but if you can goog up some pics of each type of leaflet, you should be able to discern which it is you've got there.

Not sure about walnuts, but I know squirrels bury acorns in clusters, as I've often seen more than one in a group.

Sumac and Ailanthus would be considerations as possible 'volunteers' here, as well.
