There are also comic book stores, they carry all kinds of them including the rare collectibles. Google comic book store plus your location, you should get some options.
A young child reader series could be helpful, they get drawn into the story and want to read more about it.

I have about 700 of those type comics (in readable condition) that I would love to sell. I have even more that aren't in good shape. I was hoping to get 50 cents each ($350) for the whole lot. I collected comics when I was a kid. Loved the Disney comics.

I hate to give them any press, but I remember Books a Million having a huge selection.

Check garage sales and thrift shops for children's books. What does he like? animals, sports, cars, motorcycles, nature, etc. Does he draw pictures? Art? Have friends, if so have a reading party, check with your local library for their programs. Does he do DV's? Can he look at pictures, have headsets with audio reading? Hope this helps.

Very good idea, Sheila. I usually go to yelp if looking for a certain kind of store. Go there and search "comic books" and type in your area too. When he's older he might be interested in the Tin Tin series which were very popular in Europe. One of my kids and my nephew liked them.

Well, I ran over to our Barnes and Noble. What they call comic books are hardback and nice paperback books running from $8 to $20 and not the subject matter I was accustomed to reading. I don't want to spend much as he does not re read books. He reads well, but needs to develop the skill more as well as his comprehension. He has all his father's books and we have bought him many too. It is just I would like to find something he would read without demanding that he sit down and read. They have a few hundred books at home, and he resists reading.

I wonder if they sell REAL comic books these days like we bought years ago. A comic book store here closed recently, but they were carrying stuff for teens, and that is not what I want.

It's been 20 years since I bought any comic books, but when I did, they cost about $2/each. I wonder what they cost now.

What are his interests? My middle child has loved Star Wars since he has been three years old. When his first grade teacher told me he was reading at the low end of average, we physically went to the book store and picked out Star Wars books. There are some I Can Read type books that were a little above his level, but because he loved the subject matter so much we could sit down together and read until he got the hang of it. I also bought him a Star Wars encyclopedia. My son progressed to where he was well above grade level by the next year and is now an avid reader.

I'd suggest picking out a subject matter your grandson loves or taking him with you to pick out a couple of books.

Barnes & Noble probably directed you to the "graphic novels" shelves! That's a phrase I have to remind myself to use when I'm talking to my nephews and niece about what I call "comic books"! And you're right: They are a TOTALLY different genre! One suggestion: Most of the B&Ns have several shelves in the front of the store of discounted books, and you might find a compendium of some strips like Garfield, Shoe, Mickey Mouse, Peanuts and the like. I second the rec for looking at eBay, too, tho I'm sure some sellers are promoting their comic books as "vintage" with a matching price tag.

The hardback books you're describing at B & N are graphic novels. They're very popular with kids, especially the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and Captain Underpants. Some adults find the Captain Underpants series silly, or downright stupid, but kids like them and more importantly, read them. (In another post someone was talking about their grandsons loving the fart gun they'd just gotten - it's all about the audience!) One good thing about a series, is once the reader is hooked, there's more books to read. Graphic novels are also not as simple as you might think, as you need to read the words and look at the pictures to get the whole idea of what's going on.

Roscoe Riley Rules, by Katherine Applegate, is another series which a lot of 3rd graders like. It is NOT a graphic novel series. The books are short and funny.

Kenny and the Dragon, by Tony DiTerlizzi, has a storyline which hooks a lot of kids. Here's a link to take a look at the book. I'm not suggesting you buy it, but wanted you to see what the book is about.

I'd really suggest instead of putting any money out, that he and his mother go to the public library. They have all the books I mentioned. And the best thing would be to read with him. "Working on his reading over the summer" doesn't mean handing him books, telling him to sit and read, and walking away from him. Read aloud to him, take turns reading aloud. Ask questions that make him think, such as what do you think will happen next? What would you have done differently? Which character do you think you're most like?

If you and your grandson don't live near each other,or even if you do, what about you both getting a copy (from the library) of Kenny and His Dragon and talk about it together on the phone every couple nights. Again, making predictions, talking about what you like and don't like, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions, Carabubble. The Captain Underpants series is definitely popular with him. We gave him a stuffed Captain Underpants and books for his birthday. I have seen the Wimpy Kid books and have delayed giving them to him. I had not heard of the other series you mentioned and will look them up.

This grandson is the one who suggested the Fart Gun for his little brother. They have returned home this afternoon WITH the Fart Gun!

I agree, Watchme. He loves books about dinosaurs, pirates, sharks and other ocean critters, and he has lots and lots and lots of them. He is a good reader, but the teacher says he needs to work on comprehension and improving his skills over the summer. We definitely want to do that and would like him to do so with enthusiasm. Sometimes he likes to read to his little brother. But he rarely chooses to read for enjoyment. I feel that will come with greater reading speed and skills. So I set out to try entice him with books that would interest him more. That is when I remembered how much my siblings and I loved comic books when we were his age. I figure reading age appropriate comics or novels or nonfiction all will give him the practice he needs.

For improving comprehension and other skills, I think it's more important to read for content than just read. A good strategy would be to find some new books in subjects he enjoys, like ocean creatures, and have him tell you about what he has read. This is especially good over the phone, where he has to tell you about it in words, with no faces, gestures, etc. If he's not interested in fiction but needs to work on understanding stories, how about some kids' biographies of people like Jacques Cousteau, Jean Lafitte, and Sir Walter Raleigh. If they don't have any published books available, you might be able to print off something appropriate from the 'net, and let him illustrate it and make it into a book.
