LetÂs talk comic comic strips!! What was/is your favorite comic strip in the newspaper? IÂm going way back but my favorites were:

I've never been a huge comic strip person, but I do love For Better or For Worse. I've been reading it every day for years.

When I was a kid, I loved Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy and
Lil' Abner.

Hey Rusty! Glad to hook up with ya again. Always get something good out of reading your posts. You wrote: "Quit worrying! The little bit of vibration you are getting doesn't hurt the battery! We all use them, and they hold up well." Funny you should mention that. I AM a worrier, I admit it. I worry probably too much about things I'm uncertain about, like the battery issue. I worry because like all of us here, I need the machine to start and run when it's job time... time and resources are sometimes short, and it's a pain to push the mower all the way back over to the Jeep and jump start it. I guess I worried in this same way about the other issues like tires, oil burning, blades, etc... until one by one I got those things resolved and could quit worrying about them. But you're right, I do tend to over worry about things, working on that. But it's good to know these batteries will basically hold up under the vibration. I need to drag out my scope and monitor the alternator output to see if it's charging properly... oh wait, I'm worrying again (heheh!). You described the process of modifying the receiver to accomodate the larger battery? That's one way to go. Funny thing: Saw an Ebay photo a while back of an MTD tractor for sale, and someone had hung a huge full-sized CAR battery off the back fender behind the seat. HMMM... You wrote: "I must admit--if you want to be self-sufficient in owning a lawn tractor, you will need to get some hand tools, as paying somebody to do things, gets old, and expensive!" Amen to that! It was over 30 years ago that I paid for my last 'professional' mower repair. I was mowing an apartment complex, and I screwed up and smacked the blade into a concrete irrigation pipe. Bent the shaft, oil was leaking out. I watched while this 'old school' mechanic used a large iron pipe fitted over the shaft to cold-set it back to straight. It worked, and that mower ran for a bunch of years until someone stole it (go figure!). That old guy taught me a bunch of stuff... rest is soul he's most likely gone by now... but the spirit of what he gave me lives on here. I think you've got that spirit too.

Fascinating discussion here. I learned to love the violets, and when I run across some in the lawn, I dig them up and plant them with the ajuga over in the shade. We had lots of old brick from tearing down our Katrina-damaged house on the river, so I laid them flat as a mowing guide for the walking lawn mower. I have a "yard friend" who is a demon with his weed wacker, so I let him do the honors. But I also get the weed suppressing type of dark mulch for my dressier flower beds out front. In the back yard, I use those 12x12 red pavers from Lowes for my walking paths, with an extra row of flat-laid bricks for the trim. What I wind up with is some pine straw mulch or chip mulch or weed suppressing mulch, and then that persistent dollar weed grows in that instead of the soil beneath, and I can thus remove it easier. I'm not into perfectly maintained flower beds, dontchaknow, it is more hit or miss and very tropical looking around here. But I'm fascinated with the hypertufa, and will be tempted to try it at some point. I hope you folks keep talking about what you've done so that I will stay inspired. Love gardening, but not in the heat thank you. I'll wait for Thanksgiving to get serious about it.

Yo Steve, I wrote you a big long reply and guess what? It was never posted!!! Here I though I answered you. Anyways here it goes. On the peony front, Lynn told me when I first started to plant I should try peonies, guess I should of listened. I guess I'll though some into the ground and see what happens. I have about 15 this year and 5 are blooming or should I say bud stage but nothing is happening. As for the Lilac I don't sell a ton to florsit or wholesalers. Oh now don't think for a minute they don't want my stuff. They fight over it. But they all want to pay nothing for it. I have about 3 or more florists I deal with and thats it. I mainly sell straight to the public and they fight over the fragrant lilac. Stuff that is half dead they kill for. So yes I like sensation it just doesn't do well for me. Yep I have about 60 beauty of moscow with about another 25 ordered. I love it BUT it hasn't lasted a long time in the vase for me. Ok now on to the cherry question. I have never seen or heared of that cherry. I mostly like Utah Giants ( not good for a commerical orchard) Bings and Royal rainers. I also grow skeena, early burlat, black tartarians, lapins, rainers, brooks and some others. I would tell you to make sure you have pollinators even if it is a self pollinator. Boy my lavender is really looking good right now. What in the world am I going to do with it all????? Jeanne, Thanks a ton for the info. Wendy awesome picture. I've been thinking of useing the newspaper mulch trick myself. I have just used mulch and it just worked ok. Also are peonies drought tolerate? from the folage they look like they would be. Similar: Football Different: Football It still stands out in my mind when I was first in Canada we were driving down "the" highway, came up behind someone and they pulled over onto the shoulder of the road. Surprised us both, but we passed without changing lanes. That's something I really like. Should help avoid accidents. And is just plain courteous. But I have also heard that it's not as common in CA as I guessed. Also, at least parts of CA have square plastic ice cream pails, here they're round. Square just makes more sense. Was just watching a Triumph, the insult comic dog bit, where he said about poutine looks like somebody took a dump on my fries! LOL Gotta love old Triumph! And don't get me started about the post office delivering (or NOT delivering) newspapers. 15 days to go 180 miles? Sorry it's not the workers, er employees that should be taking firearms in there and blasting away... I'm amazed more of the bilked public aren't going postal Some milk jugs have a deposit on them, most don't. Some states require deposits on normally non-returnables to encourage recycling. And the first trip up we made the mistake of asking for a "liquor store" when we wanted to buy some beer. Carried a couple brands and it looked so strange to see PBR in the "imported" section. Otherwise things looked so similar. Also seemed to me most stop lights would be horizontal. Most here are vertical although some places, like portions of Wisconsin have horizontal ones. Was a reminder to Toto that we're not in Kansas anymore. "Beaver Tails" sound much like what our bakerys call "cinnamon crisps", "crispies" or "elephant ears". A flaky, crisp, cinnamon sugar pastry. Many places make them, not all make them well. Oh, and another difference, I guess "Preparation H Raymond" had to become "Nupercainal Raymond" when they did the show in Canada. (The one that got Parliament all up in arms.)

For Better or For Worse. I had a crisis on the day the story ended - This Can't End! - and was thrilled when she decided to reprint it from the beginning. I end every day by reading it.

I remember Mandrake the Magician, Orphan Annie, KatzN'Jammers Kids, L'il Abner, and one that I believe was called Flying Jack.

Now my #1 favorites are Zits and Arlo and Janis. What do you A&J fans think is going to happen?

Love Calvin and hobbes, I have all the books. Ever notice, the Tiger never speaks when someone else s around? Only when he's alone with the kid. When I was a kid, I loved Peanuts. I taught myself to read by looking at the daily comics.

Best ever IMO was Calvin & Hobbes; The Far Side was great too. Now I read Lio, Frazz, Mutts and Doonesbury in strips and The Argyle Sweater as a single panel.
