I thought about that. Didn't know if too many different cultivars was a bad thing or not.

My calculations based on Moore-Sikora tables is 50#/k (give or take a couple of pounds) if you use a 90-95 CCE lime like fast acting lime. If you want to go with their recommendation: for a 90-95 CCE lime like fast acting lime, you'd apply about 80#/k. Maximum recommended rate for fast acting lime is 48#/k in any 1 year total and no more than 24#/k in any one application. So 2 24#/k apps. To reduce adverse affects, apply early Spring (ASAP for you) and mid (if you get ground freeze) to late Fall (if you don't get ground freeze). Also avoid applying less than 2 weeks of another fertilizer application. If you feel energetic, you could do 4 12#/k applications 60 days apart, 3 9#/k apps every 60 days over two years, etc*. I prefer the two app. *You can go less aggressive and reduce the amounts and spread them over a couple of years which you will need to do if you go with the university rec of 100#/k (80 of fast acting). Your choice. Btw: TEC is Total Exchangeable Cations and CEC is Cation Exchange Capacity. They mean the same thing. Did you get a separate sheet with their NPK recs? The sheet you attached above just has dashes where the numbers would normally be. Good luck.

DC, the photo link is there, let me know if you cannot see the pictures anymore. As I said, this small section has already been seeded, I did this 3 weeks ago. I know the timing was poor, but I wanted to take advantage of the sun hitting the area and no ground cover of leaves that would have been there in the fall. I believed I could keep the temp of the ground down a little with watering. We were dry and somewhat cool all spring and just got pounded by hot, humid, and wet recently, so I was wrong there. I also had no idea how extensive of a problem fungi could be until I started researching it a few days ago. I put lime down after I tested the pH of the area, it was around 5, and I put some gypsum down because the soil was a bit compacted and I read it could help break up the soil to protect against dog urine damage. I didn't put the two down at the same time, I put the gypsum down with compost after aerating. When I said there were roots coming up, I meant small roots, nothing extensive or significant. Years of soil erosion have washed away a couple inches of top soil. I figured the fine fescue and perennial rye would be the optimal grasses for the area given their tolerance for shade. The area gets sun, don't get me wrong, just not midday sun. Anyway, thanks again for the tips.

Why are you only planting tall fescue? I don't have a good feel for growing grass in your area/zone but am thinking you may be able to grow Kentucky Bluegrass or a combination of both. Here we use a mix of mostly perennial ryegrass with some Kentucky Blue grass and fescue. There's a mix called Penn State mix that's popular here with those who don't want the weeds and inappropriate grasses in the big box mixes. From what I remember if you have too much fescue and/or bluegrass in the mix you tend to get Red Dust and Red Thread which are fungus issues ( I think ). But that's here and you're there. Perennial rye grass sprouts in a week, while the blue grass and fescues take about 3 weeks. It's getting late. If I were doing the job I'd aerate the whole lawn and spread my seed and then cover it with a thin (inch) of mushroom compost purchased in bulk. Keep it damp. Some use peat; but mushroom compost won't float away on water like peat. If you're looking for a dealer in grass seed search for a Pennington dealer. My dealer here sells the Penn State mix and several blue grass mixes and several fescues from them. You can scoop seed into a plastic bag out of a hopper and put it on the scale. They also sell in 50 pound bags. There may be a mix more appropriate for your area. You could perhaps borrow a pull behind aerator or rent a self propelled. There's a professional model that pushes 8-10" rods into the ground. It's built to use on fine lawns so won't disturb the lay of the land, however any aerator is going to lift the whole lawn, Good luck
